Dash Panel Removal

O.K. I have a '66 Grande Parisienne and cannot remove the upper dash panel. I have removed the screws from the instumentation panel and got the padded bit free but the metal part of the panel will not come free. There is some sort of pin that goes through the firewall holding the assembly in place. Is there some trick to this?

Actually I have found out myself from a friend. There IS a bolt that goes through the firewall. You have to remove the vent cowling to get at the nut.

Thanks for the update. I'm sure that info will come in handy to another owner of a 66!

On the 64 - suspect the 66 is the same - you remove the screen over the cowl, and there will be three or four screws or nuts that you remove from the outside through the firewall. Then the dash top just lifts out

Man, I must be losing it. I have had 66 dashes off many times (but 20+ years ago) and I don't ever remember removing a nut on the outside of the car. Just the screws underneath that dash overhang, and then that fancy clip at each end.

I don't doubt you are right, but I would have forgotten that part.

You're right. I too have removed the dash pads off these cars before and there was never a bolt going through the firewall. It must be a later, refined, production run than the ones you and I have experienced.

Lots of times the first person to pull the dash pad just chucked the pall nuts for the pins through the firewall , that way it could be pulled in the future without fighting with the wiper arms and the cowl grille. Ive seen both conditions on cars that Ive stripped.

I'm not a drinker, so that shouldn't be my problem. I do have an abnormal amount of gray hair for my age, (since I was 15), so let's just blame it on that!!!

I think if you are having trouble with that dash pad you should likely just sell that old car.....biggrin

LOL
That's what i tell clients when I can't fix their problem.
If they are the only person having the issue, fire them, problem solved........
not everyone thinks that funny thogh.

When I have guys come to the parts department squawking about how a certain parts costs more than their car is worth, I offer to pay them the cost of the part if they will sell me the car since that's all it's worth. Funny, nobody is willing to take up my offer. My point I am making to them is to shut up and pay it. I do it in a way that it's not rude although it makes them quit whining!!!

My father-in law says Corvette guys are the worse.
And the cars are definitely worth the price of the parts.
LOL.
When I have the money, no problem, give me the part.
But when I'm a little shy on cash and HAVE to replace it (rather than replacing it cause I can afford the new part I guess), I'm a little bit of a Corvette guy myself.
; )
