Our future shed

Slow but sure............

28 X 42 when it's all done. I can hardly wait to have more roof to park under.

Keep us posted with pics Carl. My new shop was a dream come true. Are you doing the work yourself?

You know that they are never big enough. Figure out what you need then double it.

Carl, are you outside in the snow with no shirt on? Never mind, that is mounds of fine white sand right?

No, I just make it look like I am working. I just came home from work when that pic was taken. Yes, I DO wear a shirt at work though!

We have hired for the whole thing. I have very little (no) carpentry skills. My wife's cousin does excellent concrete work, so it's his job. After that, a local Pontiac nut will frame it up.

I know it will be too small, but it's just to park in. The 28 X 28 shop is on the other side of the rock pile, attatched to the house.

No, that is NOT snow, LOL. We still have a bit in the trees where it blew into big drifts, but the area where I stand has been bare and dry for a couple of weeks.

I guess this garage is to double the first one. My wife thinks we need one that she can park in. I mean she thinks I need another one to work in. weirdface

My wife will finally get to park inside, after over 20 years of marriage. At our last house, same thing. 24 X 26 insulated, but it was the workshop too!

We have a deal though. I go out and start the car and scrape the windows for her in the winter so it's ready for her if she happens to be going out that day. I am VERY obliging when it means I have a heated shop for the winter!

'Course I AM married to the best woman in the world.....

heres my shed story

The story of a shed

My wife asked me more then a couple of years ago what would it take for her to park in a garage. We have an attached double 20 x 20. I replied To build another garage.

I went to the building inspector and asked Can I build a garage on the back of my property. He said Oh you are going to put in a driveway too. I replied No I guess I want to build a workshop. He said A workshop is a business, and thats another permit. He then said Let me ask some questions. Are you putting in a cement floor? To which I replied Yes. He then said. So its not a pole barn, youre building a shed. A shed I said but I want to build 24 x 30 and Im going to electricity too. He quickly replied I dont want to hear about electricity youre building a shed.

I alo had to go to the health department to get a permit because i'm on a well

So now I have a shed on the back of my property that is 750 sq ft. Oh and now has electricity, furnace, chain hoist on a I-beam, 240v 5 hp compressor and a driveway. Just so my wife can park her Jimmy inside the garage in the winter.

I wastn't quite sure what to call it. I can't call it a garage, cause that is attatched to the house.

I can't call it a shop, because my workshop is the garage!!!

And my wife has never complained in over 20 years of having to park her driver outside. I am VERY blessed...

Here is why men should have sheds. Check it out for yourself and plan for your own. http://www.jibjab.com/view/89344

A website for guys who just want to talk about garages and show off theirs?
Who knew? www.garagejournal.com

It's a great site. Worth checking out and getting green with envy.

Thanks Carl, for fixing the link. I don't know how to do that.

Yes Todd, the garagejournal is worth looking at for ideas, help and ego deflation for those of us who don't have show quality garages. It would appear that there are many guys trying to join Jay Leno in the "more money than brains" club.

Rick (could also be a Carl, as that is my middle name)

Well, my builder was here today (different guy than the concrete guy) and I think he has talked me into a 12 foot ceiling. That way I can put a 4 foot mezzanine at the back end of the shed for about that last 10 feet. I went to his place and looked at his garage that he has done that in. Great place to pile junk!

I built my shop 2 years ago. I have storage above my office in the shop. 9 X 9 office with 9 X 12 storage. At the other end of the shop above my workbench is a 40" shelf the full depth of the shop. There is enough height to store a hood on its side. My air compressor is on the same shelf. I have 12' 10" ceiling height so I would have enough height for a clear floor hoist. No hoist yet but some day.
I eventually put up more storage shelves beside my office. I seem to collect way too much stuff. Or maybe I just won't get rid of anything.
 Here are some pics.

Wow, very nice indeed...

This will be only storage for me. I have 28 X 28 to use as a shop. Just that most times, that 28 X28 seems to have 3 cars plus a small tractor in it, so it's crowded.

Crowded is always an issue in my shop as well. I think you will be happy that you put in the mezzanine.
Don't forget the pics as you progress.

I will do my best with pics. I'm usually pretty good at that. Tons of video when we built our house, and it paid off now. When we had to drill for the piers now for the shed, I needed to know the location of a sewer pipe that is buried and the video bailed us out!

carl, consider using attic trusses (if you havent ordered already), especially if you are planning a 6/12 or steeper pitch, it'll give you a tonne of 'off the floor' storage space...

We discussed some storage space options on Saturday, and that is one of the consideratiions.

Thanks, and don't be scared to mention any ideas you may have!

maybe you better look at 12 ft walls. i have 10 ft walls and a 4 post lift wouldn't be an option, you wouldn't have much clearance to crawl under the car after installing lights and what ever. i have a friend who went with the 10 ft walls but his rafters pitch up in the middle, not straight across. another option is 2 ft cement then 10 ft wood. i put an I-beam across to use for lifting. and it get used quite alot. heres 2 shots ones when i dropped of a 454 and the other one is when i used it to put a mototcycle engine on the table. the I-beam spans 24 ft. i think you can tell with the second pict 10 ft ceilings aren't that high
