Photos 67 2+2 surgery

My poor car is undergoing some much needed repairs.
It makes me sad to see it like this, but I believe it will recover.

Looks like you are doing it right Rick. My hat is off to you. Not many guys do this on these cars. Here in Ontario it seems most of them are full of bondo and rivets!

Yeah, looks like really good work.
Sure going to make a big difference when it's done.

Looks like it's starting to feel better already. It's fun watching the puzzle go back together!

There are no rivets. The passenger side is a new GM quarter. The trunk floor is from a 4 door donor. The drivers side is part original, reproduction patch panel, door skin from 4 door and various other patches. All welded and seam sealed. A little bit of bondo to get the shape right and it is looking good. We spent the day yesterday trying to get door handles and power windows working correctly.
The reproduction door handles I bought will not work. We ended up using the rear door handles from the 4 door. At the moment, the passenger side window is too sloppy to align correctly. We need to figure out how to make it acceptable before going to the paint booth on Thursday.

Excellent work, did you do it all yourself Rick?

I'm pretty close to being at the stage of opening up the 1/4's like you did. Although I'll only need to (hopefully) cut from the trimline down. I have a good driverside quarter that is useable, but have to piece together the passenger side from a unrusted but crumpled one.
Anyone have a nos 69' coupe passenger quarter...lol!

Is that a rechrome back bumper?

Cheers, Mark

The work is being done by an expert. I am helping as a junior apprentice/parts chaser.
I get to clean things, sweep floors and hold stuff.
We finally got all the windows working and aligned well. Reproduction rubber is not as good as original. Just watching a master at work is a pleasure. The windows would have taken me weeks to adjust.
If anyone is thinking about doing this kind of a job, there are many many reasons why a parts car is valuable. I have used 2, a very bad condition convertible and a pretty nice 4 door hardtop. They have each proven to be worth their weight in gold.
The bumper is freshly rechromed and looks nice. Not perfect, but very nice. We did a bit of grinding and bending in advance of the rechroming and the shop did some repair work on some dents.
The plan for today is get the sanding done and tomorrow it should be in the paint booth.

Rick

It sure looks great on here. Was it a good experience, timewise, dollarwise etc?

We started real work Super Bowl Sunday. Target bodywork completion April 25th, then June 2nd, then July 31st. Got it out Sept. 14th.
I was thinking $10 to $15k. Admitted to $12 for the wife which was 50% more than she thought it was going to be.
It was more.
I am very happy with the work that was done. The wife doesn't see much difference, it's still a 100 point perfect car. At 100 kph or 100 feet away people will still point and say it looks perfect.

I'm sure it's nicer than you give credit for. We always tend to be most critical of our own cars.

Some receipts are in the appropriate car folder in my office. These total the admitted $$.
The rest are somewhere in my shop, to be passed on to some future owner, appraiser.
I think the admitted $$ approximate the annual wear and tear, plus increased value, plus $4k per year. We don't know what the real # is because we don't want to know, after all it is a hobby.
