Generator to Alternator conversion on Pontiac with ammeter in dash

I put an internally regulated 3 wire alternator on my 62 Parisienne in place of the generator when I swapped the six for a V8. I followed a Chevy wiring diagram for a car without an ammeter. It works - charges 14+ volts under load, but the factory ammeter doesn't read properly, plus I think I'm getting a drain on the battery when the car is not running. Does anyone have any expereince with this type of swap? I'm worried that the ammeter circuit is not up to handling the load of the charging system. I'm willing to bypass the ammeter but I'm thinking that I might need a resistor in the system to make it all work off the key. Any advice and/or wiring diagrams for this swap would be appreciated.

To find out if you have a drain, pull your Negative clamp off the battery and stick a test light in-between the Neg. post and Neg. clamp..
If it lights up you have a drain..

If you've caused it by your alt. wiring, that's an issue itself and check the 59StatoWgn's link..

Some newer accessories like radios etc have a weak constant drain to keep station memory intact but if it's a glovebox light, trunk light or other accessory drain, leave the test light beaming as above and pop fuses one by one until it goes out to help identify which it may be..

Good luck!
