79 Trans Am, how to classify?

OK, Here's a question for you. A 1979 Trans Am, Norwalk Ohio USA built. Original Oldsmobile 403 equipped, sold new in Ontario Canada. Do I call it a Canadian Poncho as it was ordered and sold new in Canada or Yankee Poncho as that's where it was born but shipped out same week and never returned. Or should it be a orphan PonchOlds hybrid??...

I would not call it a Canadian Poncho because it is not made in Canada and I think that is the underlying factor. Having said that I think that when referring to a Canadian Poncho we really mean a series 7000 or B Body up to 1970 with Chevrolet drivetrains badged and marketed as Pontiac engines. We have stretched this a bit to include Pontiac cars built in Canada regardless of drivetrain.

I don't think the Trans Am is an orphan either since that how it was made and there are hundreds of thousands just like it. It's a Pontiac. After 1976 there is really only one type of engine and that is a GM corporate engine. Many Pontiac die hards have never accepted this but it is true.

If we went with the theme of this site ("Your Canadian Built Pontiac, Acadian and Beaumont Resource") I'd call it American. However, we let all Pontiacs slip in!

Indeed, I never meant to exclude any Pontiac from our discussions that's for sure. We even had a 76 Firebird biggrin and a lot more Pontiacs made south of the 49th.

Most of my Poncho's have been Canadian built. Starting with a '29 Pontiac 6 with at least 6 from the 60's, and a lotta more 70's and 80's. As far as US built I had a pile of them too. 69-72 Grand Prix's are still a strong favorite to me. All of them being Canadian bought new, not built here but all with USA Pontiac engines. It's the Olds powered ones I'm starting to like in my old age

Mine was built in California, but it's almost like a Canadian built car as in 82 GM decided to use the "corporate" engine, being the 305 and it's basically a Camaro under the skin.
