The Election

I hope everyone got out to vote tonight. it was very convenient for me as the church located a 60 second walk from my back door was the polling station.
I think next election I'll form the Canadian Poncho party. My first election promise will be to give each Canadian built Pontiac, Beaumont and Acadian owner a special "Heritage Gas Card" that will give us 50% off the price of a litre of gas (at Petro Canada of course!). All other vehicle owners will be charged an additional 5% at the pumps to cover the preservation of our wonderful cars.
biggrin

To get a bit back on Topic, I have never missed voting in any election be it  municipal, provincial or federal since I was 18. I often have to vote at advance polls if I am going to be out of the country but my record is intact.

Two of my children are eligible now and I have instilled the same ideal in both of them. They often get comments from the returning officers noting that your entire family has voted or so nice to see young people voting.

This is how I look at it, both my grandfathers took bullets in WWI so my father could vote and my father put his life on the line in WWII so I could vote. I didn't have to fight for my right to vote but I'm not about to sqaunder it for those who did. I pass this on to my children.  twocents.gif

Well done Ray.

I am guilty of not being that dedicated, although I have seldom missed a vote. What you have instilled in your kids is commendable. I guess I need to make sure our kids realize the importance, and I have not done the best job of that.

You Sound like a good conservative ! I too have never missed an election and non of us should-my wife grew up in communist CechoSlovakia-now that she can vote her choice she has never missed one-oh she never missed one before either but then again they would have arrested her if she didn't and there was only one party to vote for !

shame on those who don't bother to vote

Can anybody tell me how many votes Hitler was elected on ???

answer: 1

you can make a difference -really

Proud second place Welland/Thorold riding-likely be a recount with just 100 votes difference from 1st and 2nd

Thanks for the thought-but I'd have to pass on the gas card-I never go to Petro Can, that was Trudeau's idea-lets buy up all the gas stations to control the price-we'll sell it cheaper and get people to pump their own gas !

Now we pay the same to pump our own gas and have another government corporation ! We need less government, less tax, less, less, less.

Todd, I don't care if you can't speak French-english will be fine, My grandfather came here and had to learn english to settle in this great country.

Its really sad that a political party can have a leader that runs for primeminister of the country and they don't have a representative in every riding. This is not right-they are not candidates-they are debaters making it harder for any party to form a majority government

OK that would take care of the green, bloc and communist parties

then would could try to educate people what socialism is-the party for the people-this might cut back on them too making it into a more interesting fight between the main two-the party that formed the country and the other one to the left.

I endorse these comments as my own opinion open to reasonable debate

I seen a comment that Nev Cambell was horrified with the tars sands after her tour !

Who is this ? has she ever had a dirty finger nail ? she'd probably be horrified if she could see the oil spots on my driveway ! How do these lefties get air time ?

What is it with all these other parties? Do they only come out with a full moon at election time? Notice the green party got no seats. Should they be allowed to run next time? There were more parties then I can remember in my riding.

Even the leader of the Green Party lost..  Wonder if she got the message?  I am a blue follower, not always pleased with their actions, but at least I can understand his English.. biggrin

Actually it is very depressing from a democracy stand point that there was less than a 60% voter turn-out, I think that is a new all time low for a Canadian federal election.  Whatever government we get, I don't think it is good if only slightly more than 1/2 the population went out to vote it in.

That being said, I think we now have a total reversal of the 90's where the Reform and the PC's were splitting the vote on the right and Liberals benefitted to our current situation where the Tories occupy the centre right and left wing vote is being split 4 ways amongst the Libs, NDP, Green and Bloc.  The Libs are really being hurt because I think most of the Bloc and Green vote previously went to them.  They may never recover.  Green is up to 7% of the popular vote.  I don't hear smiling Jack calling for election reform any more, while their seats went up, their popular vote is actually down from the last election.

May picked a stupid riding to run in, against Peter MacKay.  In my riding, I think the Green candidate was the best person, and their vote went up 28% over last time, in fact, the Green party was the only party to record a vote increase in my riding, everyone else's total votes were down 17 - 24%.  If she had picked a better riding to run in, I think she would have won a seat.

Let's remember that on Day 1 of the Campaign he positioned himself as the next Prime Minister and kept that up until the end. He finishes 4th again rofl.gif

behind a party that only has seats in one province. thumbsup.gif

My wife and i did get out and vote yesterday. I have voted in the majority elections that have been held since i turned 18. I voted in my first election about 6 months after i turned 18. My wife hasn't been a regular voter but i've got her to vote in all the recent elections over the past few years. I really had a tough choice in this one, frankly i liked nobody. However i did finally choose and made my vote count. You know i always thought our political rules were like the U.S. You have to be born there to run for top office, yet Elizabeth May was able to run. Guess we are different in that respect. Nothing against her, but it just seems strange to me. Nevertheless can't wait to do it again. Spring sound good?
