Air cleaner identification help needed please

I bought this last week along with some other parts. I have no idea what it is from but am thinking it might look nice in black at any rate.

Any ideas what it's from?

No idea, but it looks pretty cool.
Is it for a Qjet,  4gc or 2barrrel?

The lid don't look GM. Ford? I assume its been repainted. Chrysler used orange lids at one time.

It has been painted, yes.

One suggestion was Vette, mabye early 70's?

I forgot to mention it's Q-jet and uses an A329C air filter.

70-74 Corvette used the A329C filter and was a dual snorkel. 73 Camaro, non Z28 and 74 used the same filter. The lower housing is pre 75 so anything newer won't be it.
The lid does not look like a GM unit. It may have been changed from a small one for a cowl seal.

 Corvette from epay

 Camaro from same

 Unknown from same

I am suspecting it is some sort of factory unit on a vehicle with limited hood clearance because it's not symmetrical. The one snorkel angles down more than the other.

Good thought on the lid being changed. I hadn't thought of that.

Might be Corvette. They had different lids, but needed low hood clearance, pre 73 small block maybe? 73 to 75 had rubber seal and small lid for back of hood air intake

A friend of mine bought one at a swap meet. When he got it home he realized that someone added the second snorkel.

The Corvette and the Camaro air cleaner part numbers are different from one another. Maybe keep an eye out at a car show next year and see what is adorning the Corvette engines when the hood is up.

No matter what you find out it is a cool piece. Maybe early Nova or Acadian? wink

do you have a photo of the underside and rear side?  I don't know about the top, but the base looks like early 70's Corvette to me.

I suspect it could be 65 Acadian 327, yup!

I'll try to post some pics a bit later. Too pooped right now after almost 1/2 hour of grueling hockey in the basement with number one son just now!!! Sucks to have son who is suddenly 6' tall. He used to be easy to smoke at hockey........

And it has no flappers in the snorkels. That is why it looks old.

Try looking at a Gran Sport Riveria or Buick early '60's. The base could be L72 Chev? Yes, the top does look different, they could have been painted to match. Scratch off some paint and see what was underneath.

Thanks, I will investigate that.

I sometimes go on the Buick forum, maybe I should try a pic there.

The base looks suspiciously like early 70's corvette, with two exceptions.

1. This base has the temperature sensor for openning/closing the flapper to let in warm air from the heat stove, but no flappers.  That doesn't make any sense, and was likely added later. (the Corvette one on my 454 has no flappers, and no sensor)
2. There is no method for recovering fumes from the valve cover.  (the Corvette on on my 454 has the tube coming out from the bottom with the flame arrestor on top.  Others had the metal tube coming into the filter on the side of the air cleaner base)

It has the flange to sit on a Quadrajet carb.  Early 60's GM 4 barrel carbs had a smaller diameter throat.  Quadrajets started in 1967 if I recall, and the other smog stuff from above appeared couple years later.  From this, I'd put it late 60's Corvette.

I had no idea what the lid is from, but I see it has the AC filter markings on it.  I looked up the A329C filter, which had a number of applications, including late 60's early 70's GM trucks and Jeeps.  It's unlikely the base was on a truck, and I'm not sure about Jeeps.  While the black paint may be a close match, that paint was used for years and years, and it's possible the base and lid were married later in life.  I'm sticking with the base late 60's Corvette, and the lid possibly late 60's, early 70's GM truck.

I too noticed it had the temp sensor, but lacked the flappers.  Wierd?  i wonder if the sensor was added on?  or the flaps removed?

I'm pretty good with my truck parts, for sure NOT truck stuff.

a 64 riv would not have used the Qjet.  The 4gc base has a smaller hole.

I think you've stumped us all on this one Carl!confused

Well, I guess I have to find a forum where someone knows something, huh????!!!

Just kidding, thanks for all the ideas guys. I am going to spend more time looking at it this weekend, and looking online.

One thing, it will look a lot better in black...

I believe this is for the elusive 1965 Acadian 327 Astro-Jet 390 HP. This may be the only example in existance.

Being there's no Thermactors, I'd think the base is from one of the small lid 'Vette cleaners...1973'ish?.

The large lid????.

If looking online, the unique shape of the recessed rear area may help in identifying what it is..

Good luck!.
