I used to have to scrounge up $ for our Christmas parties in Exeter. There were several places, that held dinners and dances, for various businesses to attend.. We always had a good time, and I made sure everyone had a small Christmas gift/bonus eg.200.00 each.. It was not anything outrageous, but it makes me think of the gift I got each year We did 1.7 million per year, and they sent me(only) a tray of nuts.. haha I worked for peanuts!!! they never did see the bills for the party...

Well I worked for a company when I was in my 20's that had the most crazy Christmas parties ever. It was held at the office on Christmas Eve every year. We'd close up at noon and go nuts. We had a business that served the public so people would be coming in all morning but at noon dead bolted the doors.

Each Department would be responsible for part of the meal so we would wander around through the offices and back then booze was flowing like no tomorrow. Music would be going, dancing singing, you name it. I worked in accounting but I had a friend who worked in the print shop as our main printer. This one year I can't find him so I head into the basement to his shop to see if maybe he had a last minute job to do.

Well he was hard at it when I walked in but all I saw was his bare butt and the accounts recieveable woman prone on the desk with her blouse wide open and basically her skirt on the floor, well you get the picture.

He was maybe 25 at the time and the woman was divorced with a young child, probably 35 to 40 at the time. She sat at the desk right across from me. I never let on I saw them and backed out quietly. I did mention it to my buddy who now lived about 8 blocks from me and we had a good laugh. Never ever said anything to the woman. Even ran into her not long ago, she retired from that place after something like 30 years.

Ours is Sunday evening at the Sheraton in London. Dinner, charity casino and awards (the dealership has a 'President's Challenge" program where each employee earns points for different things (employee of the month, sales, etc) The winners from each department go on a cruise in January. The winners will be announced at the party. I'm not in the running as I've only been there 6 months but I'll be going for the gold next year!

Here's a Christmas party story:
It was about 1990. I worked at a large GM dealer. It seems like everyone is "doing" everyone at car dealerships. Anyway, there was this girl who worked as a receptionist in the showroom. It was no secret that she was sleeping with a salesman. She was engaged. My then girlfriend and I even went to her wedding and knew full well she was cheating on him. Well, the Christmas party comes along and she shows up with her new husband. A few hours later Mr. Salesman has had a few drinks and walks up to Mrs. Receptionist's husband and says "Did you know I'm s***wing your wife?" Hubby turns white, receptionist locks herself in the washroom for the rest of the night. Mr. Salesman then had the gall to walk up to him later and puts his arm around him and says "Well, I guess this means we can't be drinking buddies, eh?". I'd have decked him.
She ended up on the mental ward for a few weeks and was divorced shortly after..

I went to university with a guy who started selling for Addison on Bay then later got a regional job at GMAC working with the dealer principals on the financing. The things he tells me that some women would do for a good deal. Addison was downtown near Hospital row in Toronto and I guess he's had his share of nurses and dealer receptionists too. On his third marriage BTW plus a few weeks ago a guy in his 20's shows up at his house stating he's his son. He told me all he had to do was look the kid in the face and there was no denying it. Imagine that, being in your 50's and a kid shows up who is 25 who is the son you never knew you had! He called me looking for advice. All I could say was there's no manual for this one buddy.

Christmas party...what's that?!?!?! Our owner is to cheap for that. Nope, all we get is whatever a client might drop off...and then the farther back geographically in the building you are the less of a chance you'll hear about it. And i work at the back so...

Anyway, office party horror story...have i got one and it just happened to my wife the other night at her party.

She ended up taking a girl to the hospital. This girl hadn't looked well. She was pretty much falling asleep with her face in her plate of food. My wife's other co-workers wanted to put her in a cab and send her home. Or get her home but not take her themselves. I guess one was worried about the liability she'd face helping this girl out. My wife's boss was too drunk to do anything, after she told all the managers they couldn't drink. So my wife and and a guy she works took this girl to my wife's car and over to the hospital. My wife stayed, she told this guy to go home, turns out his wife is really very ill. So my wife has got to be there for at least 4 hours. From what she knows this girl took too many of her prescription meds, maybe something that wasn't prescription too. My wife left her name and number in case of any problems (this girl has no family in the area but had called a neighbour). Not sure how she made out but was in good hands at the hospital when my wife left. Needless to say it was a long night, but i'm proud that my wife was good enough to help when few would.

Don't have a "story" really, but proud that our company party had Tom Cochrane for entertainment.  The theme was "A White Hot Christmas" even tho it was minus 28 outside. Excellent show, food and party.  It was great to see everyone "dressed up".smile

You have to be kidding, that's big money, I know one of the Rotary Clubs here booked Colin James for a fund raiser and that cost them $25,000!

When I worked for Department Of National Defence in Downsview, we had 2 Christmas parties back to back ... 2 days in a row, 250 people per day, from 11:30 am. until 3:00 am. (and then who ever else wanted join in from their day/party could do so at their quitting time.

Drinks/beer were $1.20 ... military base prices.

Needless to say, there was a ton of drunken debauchery ... you name it, it happened! shocked.gif
I did this for 7 Christmases!

a couple of years ago we had a temp service covering off a lot of contract positions. so for our christmas party they had invited the area manager for the temp service to the party. she was sitting beside our departmental officer (Boss, Military). everybody was giving speeches grooming the military, the temp service and what ever they were thankful for, well one liquored fellow got up and announced that he had worked for the temp service for 5 years and was now making less per hour then when he had started. but he was thankful he had a job. needless to say the next day he was apologizing to everybody. didn't cut it. my boss said he can work for the temp service all he wants just not on the base.

We used to have some wild company Christmas parties in the late 80's - I think that is when their heyday came to the end and the world started to become a lot more politically correct place after that.  We would have big sit down dinners at the Royal York, and because at that time we were part of such a large conglomerate (Brascan) we also had a separate "mixer" ****tail party at the Royal York with all the other divisions headquartered in Toronto.  That just served as an opportunity to put together groups of people to go bar hopping all night and well into the morning.  Some interesting tristes resulted from those as well.  I vaguely remember one night when a group of us ended up at the Consort Bar (lobby ****tail piano lounge) at the King Edward Hotel.  I got so loaded that I actually passed out in the men's room for a few hours.  On Christmas eve we used to shut down the office at noon and rum and egg nog and other "treats" were the order of the day.  A lot of guys kept a virtual liquor cabinet in the bottom drawers of their desks - that also came in handy on Friday afternoons.wink

Does anyone on here watch "Mad Men"?  That has got to be one of my all time favourite shows.  I was born twenty years too late.  Ahh, to be young and successful in the early 60's.  I just love the fact that everyone had a bar in their office and it was quite commonplace to have a drink in the office - and not necessarily after your 3 martini lunch!

Hillar, sounds like our parties too. This is back when I started to work after university while working on my accounting designation, about 1980 and onward. The CFO had me stock a cabinet in the office. He liked Chivas Regal. I was about 24, a junior accountant and I never had scotch before, but I soon acquired a taste for it. During the heavy work load times, budget and year end we would sit down in his office nearly every night at about 5:00 pm and start knocking them back until he wanted to go home, about 7:00 pm.

It was rountine to go out for lunch and have three or four beers, probably take in the peelers once a week, go for lunch on Friday and never go back to the office. I remember once we had a Revenue Canada auditor in and we got this guy out for lunch, standard deal burger and three beers, he was a real hardass so we figured we needed to get him loosend up. I remember spending $86 on drambuies on him alone back when they probably cost $5 a shot. This poor guy was paralyzed. needless to say he went easier on us on Monday.

I don't recall exactly when things changed but somehow by 1992 or so they had.

On Madmen I know a woman who worked for the big ad agencies back then in Toronto and in her pictures from then she is Playboy material, she's 67 now. She says it was exactly as depicted on TV. She spews off all these guys she "dated" to Mary and Mary tells me. Lots of names you'd know but I'm not posting here. Wild parties and money being thrown around like crazy. She still likes the finner things in life, single malt only for her! I've also seen her smoke cigars....imagine then it is all true.

So I have a luncheon to attend today for a Board I sit on, it is just an awesome meal. It is at the Donalda Golf and Country Club which is at York Mills and Don Mills in Toronto, probably one of only a few clubs right in the City. The clubhouse is the old Estate home bulit in the 1800's and it is very nice, Huge stone fireplace open hearth on both sides, old beam mantel, is the centre piece of the dinning room. Amazing Chritmas trees and cedar rope all over with holly and red ribbons. The Christmas buffet is to die for. Very rural setting overlooking the snow covered course right in the centre of the Big Smoke.
