Anybody on here still race at their local track? I'm thinking of going drag racing again in the spring at Sparta (St.Thomas Dragway). I was going to use my 79 T/A with the 403 but it's too slow. I just got a 97 Mustang GT with the 4.6 modular motor that I traded my other 79 T/A for. It seem like it's a good candidate for Fri. nite run what ya brung type racing. I'll start out with it all stock except for tires and keep at it until I can run in the high 12's or run out of money, which ever comes first. Anybody else run the Fri nite at Sparta?
You should hear from beaumontwagon on this one. I think he runs 2 cars.
I ran our automatic Impala SS a few times but not last year. We have to drive a bit more than an hour and a half for 1/4 mile, 1/8 mile is 3 times a year but only 25 minutes away.

Got a chance to go to St. Thomas track with 5 others to run an 07 Shelby GT500 for the day. Made close to 70 passes with the car. Dave the owner of the track is quite the character.
Oh ya, lots of fun at the local tracks.Good place to spend a day in the summer and whale on your car.Be careful if you have an addiction to speed or acceleration, cause it can get expensive in a hurry.Best to just go out and bracket race a bit.Next thing you know you'll be adding one of these...
I used to bracket race years ago at Sparta and have gotten the bug again. It will be a lo-buck effort simply because I don't have much to devote to it. It would be fun to get a Canadian Poncho gang together for a event!

Would love to go more often but Sparta is a good 2 hour plus drive for me; and Cayuga isn't much better. It drives me nuts that there isn't a track closer to Toronto,I can't believe they have never built a 1/4 mile track at Mosport. Unfortunately I believe this is one of the major causes of street racing, and has led to the draconian speeding legislation promoted by Benito Fantino, our fascist OPP commisioner.

That is something that has always puzzled me Hillar. Toronto has no drag strip to call home. I know Cayuga has been a favorite of T.O. guys, but as you say it's a long haul. This is one instance where I think that worn out quote would ring true " Build it and they will come"

You boys should try out Grand Bend Motorplex Track will "hold" all the IHRA record holders. Most weekends the track is filled with racers from TORONTO ST CATHERINES WINDSOR SARNIA DETROIT
Some how drag racing is thought of by the public as the same as street racing. We had a track in Georgetown years ago, now the site of a subdivision. I also heard there was all the funding, sponsors etc. years ago for one in Markham. Politics got involved and it got turned down. The problem as I see it is jerks like fantino are reactive not proactive, so instead of getting a track they wait for someone to get hurt and then react with a big fine, doesn't solve anything. Seen lots of drag racing over the years on the street, Harveys on the Danforth, also in Richmond Hill, and Jane and Wilson, it doesn't go away!
I'll usually take my car to the track everytime I build a new motor for it just to see what it can do... but I wouldnt want to make my car a regular, i think i'd want a cage and some other safety equipment...its been tempting to build a bracket car...
i built my first motor, a 327/350 copy and it ran 14.6, i was 16 and i ran it hard, over revved it and tossed a wrist pin! then a 350 old school build with circle track solid cam and home ported 461 heads, it ran 13.6, then a 350, with old brodix heads, and a custom ground lunati solid cam, it ran 12.4 ...last summer i put in a mild 396, its slower than the old 350, 'seat of the pants' guess around high 13's probably....
i remember my first time at the track, i was so excited that i made it through to the finals of the trophy class, got excited and redlighted!! story of my life!hahaha!
its fun to go and watch guys like chris with legit 8 and 9 second street driven cars... and yes i've seen that firebird out on main st. in the snow!! that was many years ago chris!

Hey Carl. I make it to Grand Bend for the IHRA /MoparFunny Car show every summer. It's the best, most organized Drag Racing in Canada I think. Sparta is close to home and more my speed and price range. It's ironic that London Ontario has 2 Drag strips locally and Toronto none!
I wouldn't mind taking the Laurentian to St.Thomas before "the transplant"..If I blow the engine, I'll need as many CP members as possible present to push me onto the highway so I can call CAA!

Might as well hook a bottle of giggle up and send it out in style!
