Shop Safety

Today I learned the hard way my garage is woefully il-equipped to handle any kind of medical emergency. I decided it might be a good idea to fire up my generator since I hadn't run it since last Spring. After fighting with it for several minutes it still wouldn't start(yes, I had it outside the garage) . Fearing the gas may be a bit stale, I decided to grab my 7 gallon container and fill it up with fresh fuel. That container is a bit awkward when full. I fed the nozzle into the gas tank and started filling it up. For some damn reason the nozzle popped out of the gas can spraying gas onto my clothes, face and into right eye. To make matters worse, I was wearing contact lenses. I usually take them out and wear glasses in the shop as it isnt good to have contacts in my eyes in the garage as fumes etc can be absorbed into them. Being in a bit of a hurry today I didnt bother to take them out. So, not having a eye wash bottle in the garage, I dashed out of the garage with one eye closed, stinging like a biatch and ran the 80 feet to my deck, up the stairs, into my house and up another flight of stairs to the second floor washroom where we keep one of those eye wash cups. I peeled the lens out of my eye (ouch!) and soaked it for a few minutes in the eye cup. No permanent damage I think but it still stings 6 hours later..
This was a real eye opener (no pun intended) for me. I'm going to buy one of those eye wash bottles and it might be a good idea to stock a first aid kit in there as well....
Be carefull guys!

A good reminder for us Todd. I'm sorry it had to be at your expense.

I hope you make a quick recovery.

Read a story awhile back about a guy with a vintage Bentley roadster (worth big bucks) who primed it with a gas can, spilling some as always. Well you know what happened next, it caught on fire and he didn't have an fire extingusher in the shop, another car blocking it in the laneway that he couldn't find the keys for. Lost the car & garage.

We are going to have, to put Todd, on a "buddy system"  He can't be allowed in garage, no without backup

Ya, it was a learning experience. I do have a fire extinguisher however. I must have figured saving the car is more important than saving myself!

3 extinguishers in our workshop, one at each walk in door. Extinguishers are cheap!

We got ours from our house insurance guy. He pops by once a year and checks them and replaces them if they are expired at no cost. I guess that's cheaper for him than paying out after a fire!

I always wear safety glasses when doing shop type stuff.  All you need is to have a piece of a wire wheel just miss your eye to teach you that lesson...

You also have to be careful using your Dremel tool with the wire brush wheel on it. I hate picking the broken off little pieces of wire outa my body.

Or worse yet, sticking your hand in the pocket of your coveralls and pushing one of those wires up under your fingernail.

As they say, ask me how I know.......

Worse yet. Dropping a heavy object on your big toe. Then finally ripping it off after two weeks of hell from it moving up and down in you sock.

I hope you mean your toe nail , I hope you didn't rip your toe off!biggrin

I actually broke my big toe once, I was drunk (student university days - common occurrence) and was trying to wrestle some ice out of the freezer when this big roast fell out of the freezer right on my toe.  It sorta hurt at the time, but I guess the liqour kinda killed the pain.  The next day when I was semi-sober and peeled my sock off, it was an ugly site.disbelief

Came home one night a couple of years ago, took off my shoe, put my foot down to lift up the other foot to remove that shoe. Somehow curled the big toe under as I put my foot down and stood with all 170 pounds on a curled under big toe. It sounds just like a turkey wishbone when the big toe snaps. It pulled the nail right out of the toe. Yes, it does hurt a bit...

Ouch! I've had my share of weld slag burns and yes, those damn dremel wire wheel strands!
When pulling apart the front seat of the Laurentian I moved the seat adjuster not realizing it was in a position that was under spring tension. The adjuster flew forward and punctured my arm. I still have a mark to remind me of my stupidity..
