January 2009 Feature Car

The neat thing about a car that has been under the same ownership for a number of years is the transformation the vehicle takes over time. A perfect example of this is Andrew Konowalchuk's (AK67SD) beautiful 1967 Beaumont SD. Having owned the car since 1987 (at the tender age of 14), Andrew has made several changes to the car including colour, drivetrain and wheels, with each change making the car even better.

Here's a little more about the Beaumont in Andrews own words:

"I bought the car in 1987 when i was 14 years old, spent two years doing a frame on restoration so that when i turned 16 this was my first car.  Of course with unlimited help from my dad, we did everything but the paint.  I have been driving it this way ever since.  It still sports the 20 year old paint, original unrestored interior and vinyl top and original sheet metal.  The car was shown regulary from 1989-94 and won over 30 first place awards, including Best Paint, Best Engine, Judges Choice, Peoples Choice and Show Chairmans Choice awards in shows in Manitoba, North & South Dakota and Minnesota. The car was originally a sports option 283/PG car and is now a mild 396, with a summit 1301 cam, and roller rockers. Edelbrock Perf RPM intake and Holley 770SA carb. The tranny is a TH350 with a 2400RPM stall convertor and the original 3:73 gears."

The Beaumont as i bought it in the summer of 1987:

The car part way through the restoration, stripped to bare metal, body on resto.

The car was painted in Spring 1989 and was ready for me to assemble and start driving to school and shows.

Engine was built and run on a break-in stand, the first motor was a 327/350hp
andrewbeaumont7.jpg

My first drag race, 1990, I was 17 and testing the motor I built, that winter I pulled off the 461 heads and spent the winter porting them from some diagrams I found in an engine building magazine! We also made a jig for the drill press and machined them for screw in studs. I eventually went from 14.8 to 13.6 to 12.4's ETs over the next few years.

The engine in 1991 with one of the various intake setups i've had on it over the years. Vintage 3 deuces.

Another pic of the engine, showing more of my dads handy work, he made all the aluminum and stainless peices. I was lucky to have a dad who is a machinist!

Fast forward to spring 2008, I decided to put a BBC in the car, a mild 396, and the stock original 3:73 gears back in the diff.

Awesome Beaumont and great story, looks tough in the feature shot, just the way they ran back in 67!

A super car deserving of the COTM. I always like the history behind the rides and you've got a pretty cool story. Wish i had thought ahead at 14 to get a car. That thing looks so damn mean, especially with the dog dishes. Great work and congrats on the recognition here!

Manitoba has made a good car of the month showing so far. John's wagon and this one too. Did I forget anyone else from here?

Very Nice !

My favorite car has always been a 67 SD Beaumont

my first car also at the age of 14 in 1982 was a gold/gold 67 Beaumont Custom two door hardtop with buckets and console.

Owning over 300 cars through the years the only one I quote as should have kept was my Deep Water Blue 67 SD396 in 2002-owned it from 1994 to 2002 came to me via Winnepeg

Well I do thank my dad and give him all the credit for taking me car shopping when i was 14!! We probably looked at almost 30 cars! I wish i could have bought more of them! i do remember a 67 acadian, and a 67 chevelle ss396 4spd -that one was already restored for $9000. My older brothers did the same thing, one had a 63 Comet Convert when he turned 16, the other a 51 Ford, mild custom (his first car was when he was 12, I was 7, a 67 Falcon with a 289 -traded it for a 12 of beer off a neighbour -my dad let my brother drive it on a mud oval track in our back field!)...

Ken, did that blue car have A/C?? I remember seeing a BBC SD, that i thought was black, out once in the late 80s early 90's in winnipeg, it had A/C, havent seen it since. I know of another 67 738 car black/black in winnipeg thats had the same owner since the early 70's -original motor is gone, but the car is all original sheet metal, very minty, has been driven only a few times in the last 15 years that i've know it...

My beaumont was my first car, will be the last one with me too! (It was listed for sale in the Buy and Sell for $1000 obo, i was the first one there and had to offer him $1100 to let it go that same day!)

Thanks for the kind words guys!

AK

That black big block A/C car belonged to a friend of mine. He is our service advisor now. He sold the car about 15 years ago. It had been done up as a stocker. It was originally a Custom, not an SD. Butternut yellow, buckets, 327 and I think 3 speed manual floor shift. It had all the options added. Air, tilt, wood wheel, GTO tach and gauges, AM/FM, power seat, pass recliner, headrests, power windows, power trunk, tint, power antenna, tissue dispenser and likely more I am forgetting. If you want, when you come out here I will dig out an old video I made of it in about 1983.

That car is now sitting outside, rotting away. It has not seen the road for years. For sale maybe. I hear the price is $25,000 and it needs completely re-done......

That one had the air put in from a 67 Lemans. All factory pieces but it was not there when the car was assembled at GM.

Good job Andrew. Ive known Andrews car from almost day one.Always drooled over it at the world of wheels shows back when I was in highschool. Then spent my first cruising years driving around with Andrew and his buds. When you own a car as long as Andrew you have to change some stuff up once in a while.
