Just wondering - P-----C beaumont?

Just wondering does anyone know why gm historical (george?) writes/wrote Pontiac Beaumont on all the form letter documentation sent out on the GM paperwork? Is that still the case, or what that a period anomolly?

thanks,
ak

Andrew, about a year ago a thread on this topic cause a lot of hard feelings and had to be shut down. People have strong opinions on this on each side. As for GM documentation my suspicion is it looks like a corporate policy probably stemming from the fact that Beaumonts were marketed through the Pontiac Dealer network. Last week someone posted a web page link to GM corporate web site and it also has the Pontiac reference.

Mine have all been listed as "pontiac beaumont"  or "pontiac acadian Beaumont"  from George Zapora.  Over the last 10 years i have been getting them for my cars they have always said that.

So which plant were beaumonts built at? and were there other lines built there (if so which ones)?

Not trying to open up the debate Ray, just notice a shift in old to new documents ...old stuff lists pontiac and beaumont seperately, but then it also lists firebird seperately... newer info (like these form letters from george) list Pontiac... for the first 10 years with my car, i called it a pontiac beaumont, the last 10 just a beaumont...so i'm 50/50!hahaha!

I need to find my older gm paperwork (i had mine decoded about 19-20 years ago) I don't know if george worked there then, and I dont remember how mine was described.

Years ago I thought the Acadian's and Beaumont's were Pontiacs because that's what most people refered to them as Pontiacs.

But after ownig my Acadian and going throught my parts catalogue, assembly manuals and owner's manual for my Acadian, not one Pontiac word is written in them. They refer to the Acadian as a GM of Canada Product (ie. it's own brand).

Here's some more on the Zapora comments.

Here's some icing on the cake for me. Acadian is listed with the other GM brands as a seperate brand.

It would "look like", last years discussions, on our site, and others, caused GM  to make a statement...  I would be cool, to see, the confirmation GM , reportly sent to Wikipedia..   I dont think, we need to get into a negative discussion, on this subjet...  Call them what you want.... "Poncho" sounds good to me...Carl

That statement never existed, wiki isnt a reliabe source of info... the current wiki for beaumont states that is an independent marque...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaumont_(automobile)

After going through some of the links that others have posted on this subject, i'd have to say that i'm believing it to be its own marque as anything from the era doesnt refer to pontiac. the only reference is current 'official' opinion by george etc. with some solid background. but the logic of pontiac not taking any credit for being the marque on any era advertising doesnt make sense. all period references for acadians indicate to go to your "local gm acadian dealer"... interesting...

unless it cames from GM and nobody else, Im siding with ak 67sd and 62Beaumont, Acadian is its own marquee. Acadian with models, Canso, Invader, Beaumont

Just thought that I would mention that when I was sanding off my rear frame ,just behind the drivers rear wheel the frame is clearly stamped "PONT" . I think someone hear has already posted a picture of this.

I am glad, I posted the "actual pages" from Wikipedia that were up dated in Dec 08..  You are correct, they have been changed back, on a Jan 24th update...  Someone, must have got ahold of them, and corrected it...   Guess Henry can leave his 'modified" historical sheet on his website... Glad thats settled   .....

Call them what you like but I am sure you had to buy "it" from a Pontiac-Buick dealer and not a Chev-Olds dealer. Maybe "it" is a Buick.....NOT. They were sold at the same place as the other Canadian Pontiacs of the day. Were those called something different just because they were Canadian only cars?

How about this: There is no place on my newer Trans Ams were it is called a firebird yet it is the base model of the car. Why does everyone call it a firebird? As well, it has a chev engine.

In the end, does it really matter? I would prefer to enjoy these cars as a great piece of Canadian history and not debate what they are or what they were called. Bottom line is they are cooler than their Chevy cousins because they are ours and we are proud Canadians!!!

The "PON" on the frame refers to the frame plant in Pontiac, Michigan.
The chevelles are also stamped "PON"

Just a note too,  my dealer tag is similar to the above one,
Pontiac - Buick - GMC - Acadian - Vauxhaul.

I'm with him^^^^. I think they are head and shoulders above their cousins!

For the record, my 1991 Acadian docs from GM sent by Roy Mercer say my car is a Pontiac Acadian.

If you check out the link on the nova site, all of references posted on there said to buy them at your 'acadian' dealer... they were sold at GM-Pontiac-Buick-Acadian dealers... any ads never referenced to go to the local pontiac dealer... but we all know it was the the non-chevy gm dealers that were chosen to distribute the car...

I was always a believer in the completely separate mark theory...until the thread here last fall that is when someone posted old GM internal documents and Beaumonts were referred to as a Pontiac series..
Pontiac 3000 or something like that?.
Although available at Poncho dealers they were always marketed as a separate brand though..

It would be interesting to track this controversy over time. When I purchased my Beaumont new in 1967 it was clear in my mind, and everyone who I knew, that a Beaumont was a Pontiac. But given it was over 40 years ago it might be that my memory has a little slippage. Plus what did I know; in 1967 I was only 19. It was only when I used a photo of it in a calendar in 2005 that I first heard that some people think Beaumont is a separate line from Pontiac. As you can probably tell I havent been immersed in the car culture over the years.

Other controversies have come and gone since that time. For example I talked to one expert, who shall remain nameless, who thought that the louvers on the 1967 Beaumont faced so as to scoop air instead of to exit air. He used the factory brochure as evidence of his position. If you look real carefully you can see he has a point. I disagreed with him and all I can say in defense of my position was that the three cars that I saw delivered here in Calgary all had their louvers on the same way as mine.

It always make me wonder why people who are promoting these conspiracy theories dont simply track down the people who were working at GM and ask them instead of looking for some piece of trivial evidence. In my case I worked for a time at a GM dealer in 1970 when we had a 1969 COPO Camaro on the used car lot. It was the ugliest car. It was yellow with a yellow hounds tooth interior and we couldnt give it away. But boy did it ever light up the rear tires!

There are other controversies surrounding these cars such as the factory installed 427. I know if I need some info from those days I just need to phone an old high school buddy who has worked at a local GM dealership for over 40 years. Jack Carter was the unofficial performance dealer here in Calgary in the 60s. He and another coworker had business cards indicating that they were the performance representatives. They can tell you all sorts of stories about things they had installed for customers. All three of us were just out of school and it was a powerful combination of youth and high performance cars. AH! Those were the days.
