GM Vintage documents

Just a rumour at this point-but I was told today by a Toronto customer that GM plans to close its historical vehicle division as part of the cuts-I'll call George and ask for first hand input-this would be sad.

That would be sad. I can't imagine they are losing money at $57 a pop.

there you go ! add it to your current business, bring a cell phone and pen to your Stelco office to write down the V.I.N.'s

lets not get our hopes up-I find it hard to believe this is going to happen and if it does George would be the man to buy the job

I would have to say that I can't imagine they make anything at $57. When management is faced with a cutback situation like they are now generally they focus on core functions and those that are not core are expendable. I can't imagine that looking up VIN's for 40 year old cars is core. If this 'past customer' service is cut it would certainly not be a surprise to me. It adds nothing to the main objective of the company which is selling new cars.

yes-very much agreed-at $57 a pop I'm surprised they even do it-way back when it was free tons were done-I doubt they do that many, lets say they do three an hour everyday five days a week all year long thats what ? 750 or so a year @ $57 each that wouldn't cover the wages and benifits of the employees let alone the office space equipment etc...

Yes Ken and while the idea that someone could purchase the rights to do this is a great idea for enthusiasts the basic paradym remains unchanged. It would be difficult to do this on a profit basis unless you already had an infastructure in place and a diversified offering of other related services. Numbers are my life, I do this stuff everyday. One idea for feasiblilty would be for a large parts supplier, like Ames or PY to do this for example since it would compliment and enhance their core function which is selling restoration autoparts.

or an appraiser-mind you the cost of purchasing the rights and the legalities are likely far larger than one would expect.

As Far as i know,  George works for a company that has the "contract" to do the vintage services.  I can't remember the name of the company now.
Does anyone else remember it?  I think they had shirts at autofest in oshawa a few years back?????
But maybe i am totally wrong?????

Not sure. The bills come from GM when we use them (GM Vintage Services) for key codes at work.

But that is still no guarantee it's not farmed out.

I seem to remember something like that happening right around the time they started charging

I think this would be a 6 figure proposition plus a lot of caveats attached. There is a lot of risk associatied with this fucntion. Without going into any details this information in the wrong hands has the potential to reap huge financial gain.

Vintage also does key codes for us and I can't imagine that being removed.

This makes sense to me now, that seems like an essential service so the functions are bundled making it a more feasible operation.

I never thought about getting George to do a search of the Fleetwood, Is there a restriction on year of car?

I'm going to have to phone as well. I seemed to have "misplaced" my GM documentation for the Velle's when I moved. I hope they don't try to pull the plug on this too soon.

Do you mean for key codes or documents in general?

I can get you the build date, option list and some other misc info but after 10 years the warranty repair history goes "poof", up in smoke.

I meant the documentation. Can I PM the VIN to you?
