Interior is almost done

Just waiting on some horn parts so I can put on the steering wheel, and still have to complete the fresh air vent restoration and put them into new kick panels, but the interior is darn close to complete.

Interior1.jpg

Too bad I didn't take a photo of the 'before' with dented dash, scratched off-white paint (now silver), rusted gauge bezels, faded dash trim, crumbled knobs, etc.

Here's a shot showing the custom "Silver Streak" upholstery a little better -- to match the stainless steel stripes on the hood smile.gif

Interior2.jpg

More to do to finish rebuilding the suspension and installing new brakes, but pretty soon it'll be on the road again biggrin.gif

(actually it's on the radio speaker grille, the glove box door is in the center under the NOS chrome radio delete plate)

Dave,

You're doing great work. Congratulations. Cheque-book buys are never as satisfying as do-it-yourself projects.

You're on the home stretch.

Thank you. And you're exactly right about satisfaction, getting to this:

Half_done.jpg

when it started like this:

To_be_done.jpg

is immensely satisfying.

Oh, and the 'to be done' half is on the list for tomorrow, I already scraped off 50+ years of crud, filled up half a coffee can from that side smile.gif

Hi Dave you are really coming along with the 56. Nice job. The undercarriage looks to be in really good shape and without a couple of hundred pounds of extra thick tar like undercoating! i really like the interior with the matching silver streaks.

I like it. I also like the rpm guage and where you put it. It gives me that kinda two lane black top feel about it

I too love the dash picture. It sure makes our car dashes of today (or even total interiors) look sad. The style, flair, whatever you want to call it is gone now.

Thanks. I always liked that Two Lane Blacktop 55 Chevy. I thought about mounting the tachometer on the top of the dash, like that car:
2LaneBlacktop6.jpg

but I couldn't bear to drill holes in the dash. I decided on placement for several reasons:
1. Back in the 60's, the common place for a Sun Tach was on the steering column.
2. True drag race cars put them up on top of the dash so it was more in the line of sight, but street/strip cars didn't (for a variety of reasons, including the fact that some LEOs could hassle you for 'blocking vision') and mine is more street/strip than pure drag race.
3. Sun tachs come with a mounting bracket that's curved for the steering column and using a padded (with electrical tape) hose clamp makes for a nice neat installation.
4. Angling it a bit made the wiring fit very nicely through the slot in the chrome cover that used to have the heater controls under it (I removed all that, hey, don't need heat in Florida!), and again, we often angled them in the 60's so as to not interfere with other gauges.
5. I'm hoping the angled installation will help disguise the awkward GM of Canada offset placement of the steering column (to fit the Chevy chassis) in the Pontiac dash (if you look closely at this on a 55-56 Canadian Pontiac, you'll see what I mean).

Dave

Your interior should be very close to mine (major differences are (1) 55 gauges have black background instead of silver, (2) the horizontal trim pieces have a different pattern in them, (3) your knobs were black while 56 were ivory) - if you have any questions, let me know, I had mine all apart so I know where all the hidden nuts and screws are:

Dash_apart.jpg

And here's the crud from just one axle (it's a deep dish pie pan):

crud.jpg

I hear you about the cold - I don't have that problme now smile.gif but when I lived in Minneapolis I'd rent a torpedo heater when I absolutely needed to work in the garage in the winter - and in Northern Illinois (not that much warmer than Canada) I insulated my garage and installed an LP gas wall-mounted heater with thermostat and everything. This time of year I am blessed with perfect weather so can work in the garage whenever I want (pretty much every day).

Very nice! I like the coppery color of the car with white two-tone. I still have to do all my window fur channels, and windlace, and door seals, and vent window rubber, and ... always plenty to do! smile.gif

I used to have the same problem, not wanting to drill the dash.  My wife said, what difference does it make?  you are going to sell it eventually!  She was right  I had it up on the dash, on my 72 Ventura and my 93 Sunbird RWD...  My 2 Pontiacs, are going to have them on the dash fastened to a piece of flat steel, that fastens into the defroster grille..biggrin
