The VIN replacement plate issue

I've seen more vendors offering replacement plates and matching ownerships lately.

Based on my limited knowledge of the issue and my understanding of how the authorities would likely deal with the situation, I would never attach a replacement plate to a vehicle of mine.

Best case scenario (if ever questioned) -- legal hassles and possible lost sale. Worst case scenario -- impoundment (therefore lost value) and possible criminal charges.

In order to combat vehicle theft, this is where the Canadian government is heading. It's lengthy but gets tougher the further you read....

It is a sticky situation... There is a difference in attaching a vin to a stolen car, versus a person who replaces a front or rear clip on his hobby car... If you change the frame on a 67 Corvette, is it still the same car?  not really, but its still your ,with the proper ownership  If you roll over your Yukon/Tahoe, and the body shop, replaced the roof for eg. is it the same truck? NO. does your insurance change your vin to rebuilt  no...  The insurance companies are now selling the wrecks with a clear title, so "they" can get around the rebuilt/salvage issue, THEY created...  If you replace your floors in a 67 Impala, and replace the frame, and 2 quarters, and the front fenders, and the door skins, and the rockers, and the trunk, is it still the original car?  If you buy every pices of steel as in a Dynacorn body, is it still the same VIN     quite a mess   I always profess the insurance companies started the collision/wreck by selling wrecks with a ownership   Hey if its wrecked and paid out , its junk?   sorry  I will go now  lol

In B.C. any car [vin] that is "written off"and then repaired or rebuilt is identified as such upon being re- registerd and insured

Thats what happens here, except SOME of the insurance companies will not insure them!  lol

In South Africa re-built cars retain their VIN but are registered as a code 3 and are insured at a much lower value.  Unwary buyers often are caught out by ruthless salesmen and find they sit with a lemon!
