Does anyone know what parts are involved to change a 3 speed column shift to a 4 speed on the floor. I know the shifter and linkage is different, but I'm talking about stuff like the bellhousing, z-bar, clutch fork, return spring etc (what am I forgetting). I'm not 100% sure on what parts to source to make this conversion. Can these parts be installed into a car that was originally a powerglide car, or does it require modifying the firewall for the clutch linkage etc.
Here's the story behind this question. I found a rebuilt M-22 4 speed from a 70 Camaro, and potentially could get the clutch pedal assembly and all other parts from a 3 speed column shift donor car. Can I make this work or not?
Those who know the manual shift cars, what sayeth you?
Thanks Carl, already confirmed the M-22. Did my research ahead of time. Had the owner open the tranny up so I could check the gear angle. It wasn't the 45 degree pattern, so I'm good there. Nothings been purchased just yet. Wanting to make sure this will work.
Just when I get a nice original automatic console, I ponder the 4 speed thing.
Carl - Your putting a 4 speed in your 65 right? Do you have any pictures of the 4 speed components installed? I'd love to see you project sometime to get an idea of what parts I need and how they get installed.
Everything from the 3 speed should work, but you will have to source the steering column sleeve without the column shifter. Not sure which car you want to change, but the clutch pedal has a rod which connects to the Z bar which mounts to your frame and your motor, or bellhousing. There is a shaft that is adjustable foe free play that goes to the clutch fork from your Z bar. The Acadians have a specific bellhousing so that could be tuff to find. Most other small blocks cars are generic. Hope that helps, Paul
