generator

alright, i put new brushes in the generator a while ago and i noticed today when i reved the engine their was a nice beam of light comeing from the back of it!! Is this normal as the brushes are new, or am i up sh-t creek? I was going to put an altenator on ( i have one from my 79' 305 and one from a minivan) but the wiring thing scares me. I was going to try and keep it original but now i just want it reliable because of the mexico move in a couple years.

its not that hard to do. i'm not an electrian, just do your homework. internet is great for this. i always google my question. if anything it cleans up your wiring nicely. with the newer alternator the regulator is internal. hei has the coil under the cap and the ballast resistor is not used anymore. the only thing is, do you have a gauge for the generator or a idiot light and i'm not sure what to do with that but its not something that can't be overcome. i have some wiring books you can borrow if nobody is close. i rewired my jeep to a chevy drivetrain and updated the 55 to hei with a alternator.

I bolted an Alt. on my 60, and followed an old wiring diagram I had. Its worked great so far. And the CD player and Amp don't drain my battery. I'll see if I can find the diagram again.

Keep the idiot light, you will need to excite the alternator to charge. That wire will be going to the #1 terminal or R terminal on your alternator. It needs some sort
of resistance to energize the alternator and the resistance is the bulb.
