Ray,

That means that the car carried the old black and yellow California plates issued between 1963 and 1969. All CA vehicles were issued the plates beginning in 1963. The final plate issued was ZZZ 999 in 1969.
They were issued consecutively, in alphabetical order, starting at AAA 000 in 1963.

However, even if the car is a legitimate owner of these plates, they of course cannot be used in any other jurisdiction but CA, except for display purposes.

Thanks Bob for that.  So this is a 67 and it is in that time period you mention, 1963 to 1969 so would it not be normal to have these? I quess I'm asking does this somehow affect the value of the car and are the plates them selves a desired collectible? I remember as a kid the plates we black in Ontario too then white then black on a rotation basis. I could be wrong but I think it was centennial year when they switched to blue and white.

just basically means it was sold new in California, Protect o plate is also obviously California , another support of documentation-built in California, California rust free car came up in the late 1980's was painted in Laquer had seat covers and carpets then 14 x 6 rallys added, real sweetheart-good early cars are hard to find-

Ray the last year for black and white plate in Ontario was 1964- white with black letters, 63 were black with white letters, 65 is blue with white letters then 66 reverse and so on-something to do with safety/visablity that the burucrats of the day dreamed up

The "black plate California" helps add authenticity to a car truly being a Cali. car. If you have a copy of the the Cali. title to match. I have a Porsche I bought out of California and I kept the original "blue plate" and took a photocopy of the Cali. title before transferring to Ontario. Too many people will list a car for sale claiming it to be a "rust free California car" when in fact as far south as they have been is to Windsor Ont.

that and a lot of eastern cars were brought into California-then issued California titles and sold as California cars when in fact they are not

And it should be noted that the plates were actually issued to the vehicle, not the owner like our system, so when you sold the car, the plates went with it.
