Horn works turning left or right only

When I bought Chief in 2006, and drove it home 1185 miles, the "horn" worked in any position... Last year when I pulled it (column) out, and then put it back in, the horn didn't seem to work  I installed ground straps, on the column to dash, and column to steering box, and engine to frame.  I was installing tach on column, yesterday, and turned steering left and accidentally hit horn ring and it blew! Turned to right side and it blew! With wheel in straight ahead position, It doesn't work?   What to do?  put horn button on dash? sell car? don't ever honk? use finger?

Well Carl, since I took the rollbar out of the 79 screamin chicken the interior light comes on when i hit the brakes, but no brake lights. So it looks like the same guy wired these 2 Ponchos!

Actually if the inside of your steering column at the steering wheel is anything like the 55-57 cars, probably something is broken or misaligned or otherwise snafu inside ...

Freaking little plastic pieces break or whatever ...

So pull that steering wheel and see WTF is going on in there, would be my recommendation.

Either that or see my previous recommendation smile.gif

Take it to a dealer?! They wouldn't know what to do with a car as old as yours lol

You can pull off the horn button first, and the horn ring if you have one, and see what's going on there, maybe something will be apparent. I don't know if your steering column is like mine, I suspect so, in which case if it is related to the contacts and/or turn signal mechanism, then you would have to pull the wheel. No big deal, just remove that big nut and you will need a steering wheel puller, a cheapy from your local auto parts store will work just fine.

Good luck!

Dave

P.S. see alternate method below

Since it works turning I am thinking Cancelling Cam is doing something to the connector or plunger. Like the boys say, pull the wheel and have a look.
