1970 LeMans rear end

I have a 70 lemans parts car with a 10 bolt rear that has the cut outs on the sides of the cover and it also has the square ears just like a 8.5 rear end has. Can someone tell me exactly what this rear end is. I would like to build a 8.5 10 bolt for my 72 lemans to replace my 8.2 peg leg.

It sure sounds like the stock diff to me. Picture of it may help?

It is not likely the same as the 72 Lemans diff.

Hey 70JUDGE, these 8.2 cone type limited slip aren't meant to be beaten on, they are not very strong unit, you'd better find a 12 bolt with the real clutch posi off a 455 1970-72 GTO car or Chevelle, Beaumont some Olds Cutlass ... 4 links.

Here is a pic of the 10 bolt limited slip rear end off my 1970 Bonneville, same cone type as GTO but bigger.

Its possible that it is a 8.5. I think 70 was the change over year for some models. does it have the ears on the bottom like the pic below ? If it does thats one hint its a 8.5. If you take the cover off and put a wrench on the bolts holding the ring gear they should be a 11/16 head. The 8.2 had a 9/16 head. Also the the 8.5 ring gear bolts are L.H. thread the 8.2 are R.H.

If it has cut outs on the cover it can't be an 8.5 can it?

The BOP 8.5's had the cut outs the chevy's were round.

So there's 2 totally different styles of 8.5?

I had always thought the cut out covers were a smaller ring gear.

Learned again today!
