best bang for the buck on the 283?

I have the 283 and have been told by builder to swap it ( approx 3500 to 5000 ) for a newer rebuilt 355/ 383 427 ect options.
now if I keep the 283 and just do some light mods what would give me your best bang for the buck?
90% of the time this is only used for cruisin around town but I would still like to take it out of town in the summer for the odd show so if you say gears please keep this in mind.

currently a 2 barrel( new manifold and 4 barrel top of my list ) is it worth it for new heads? valves ect ect?
engine has 63,000 miles and runs really nice with no leaks( - the old style oil filter canister which by the way does anyone know of a kit to swap that to the new style oil filter setup..)

just to throw it out there but not concitering this by any means has anyone ever turbo charged a SBC, I once saw a tt setup on a firebird or something with a carb but I'm born of the fuel injected era and have very little experence with the carb, just thought this would be a good discuession about making power( not sure how streetable they are )

anywho. feel free to throw any knolage my way and thank you.

check the compression.  If its healthy,  a 283 works nice anywhere...  Maybe check timing chain  and some fresh orange paint...

HERE IS THE CONVERSION for spin on filter   Actually I think Car Quest and Napa have them

1270 - Mr. Gasket Oil Filter Adapter
1270 - Mr. Gasket Oil Filter Adapter

This kit converts a bolt-on, can-type filter to a full-flow, spin-on filter. The one-piece construction allows easy installation for a fast, clean filter change. A rubber O-Ring is included. Must use with original bypass valve. Filter is not included, use Wix 51069, Fram PH-3, AC Delco PF-25 or equivalent.

the 283 in my truck came out of a 66 impala w/ a 2 barrel and was rated to 195hp. now bored 30 over with a 4 barrel and HEI ignition thru a nice set of duallies, i would say a little more. she will smoke the tires thru the gears and spins up faster and higher then a 350. plus when you open the hood it doesn't have all that pollution stuff all over the place, just a pcv tube off the back of the intake. when i built the engine for my truck i could have put anything in there. i even had a LT1 in there years ago. i went with the 283 to be different plus still have enough horses to push the beast around. oil filler tube looks nice on the front of the manifold. napa still sells the oil filters so i stayed with the canister.

Astro-Jet is right, he'll need the adapter designed to replace the cannister filter.

I'd definately replace the intake and carb, and also think about replacing the heads with some better flowing stock units.  There are plenty around, but the shipping of heads tends to get a little pricey.  The heart of the engine is the camshaft, so think about changing that.  Don't go wild, but something with a bit of a rumble will put a smile on your face.

Make sure the cam, intake and carb all match the appropriate RPM range you're looking at.  Edelbrock and others also make kits that are already tried and proven.  I wouldn't worry about headers, but a good dual exhaust setup will allow the engine to breathe.

So, it's cam & lifters, heads, intake, carb & dual exhaust.  The while you're at it's include pushrods and rocker arms.

Take out the powerglide (if that what you have ) and Put a four speed behind it. You will not believe its the same motor.

i put the filter conversion on mine, easy as pie. And i find that my 2-speed glide is the only real thing slowing me down and kind of annoying at highway speeds even though ive been told there great transmissions, i am considering swapping it for my turbo 350 tranny. I put headers and cherrybombs on just for the sound, but they get a little overwhelming after a while with them rumbling underneath my seat. I would go with a nice cam and maybe the 4-barrell to give it some extra push.

I think a turbo 350 would be a good idea  with a 283 that lower 2.52:1 1st gear would be a lot better out of the hole than the powerglides 1.76:1. Should give it a little more snap.

I have a turbo 350 sitting in the yard out of a 67 camero, even went to a shop last year but they quoted me like 18 hours to do the swap, don't think they knew what they were doing.

big 195 hp sticker on the engine but will not spin the tires at all.

so much info here thanks, I'm looking for minor cost effective improvements or else swap the full motor to make alotta power, so much room in these engine bays.

but I would like to keep the 283 if I could.

so transmission/ maybe gears( rear end could need some fresh oil anyhow ) new spin on filter application 4bbl and manifold or just order a Edelbrock package for it.

looks like I'm on the right track anyhow might be worth saving the old car.

my only problem with the swap is the fact that i have to get the small driveshaft shortened a bit which i dont think will cost me too much, plus it would be good to put all new ends on and a new carrier bearing, and then the fact that i cant really use the old shift linkages so i have to take the column shifter off. This for me is good in a way because then i get to make a long ass shifter with some sort of cool top on it like maybe a grenade or skull or whatever!!

i also switched mine over from a 3speed standard to a T5 with overdrive. the other thing i did was a more aggressive cam. 280 duration with 420 lift. ask fred (68sd) he has heard me squeal the tires for a 1/2 city block.

That combo sounds sweet. A little cam change and a four or five speed realy wakes up a 283.  Always liked the sound of a dual exhaust 283, They had a sound all to there own. Specialy when you heard them screaming down the quarter mile open headers.

Im 32 as well. here is a couple shots of the car when i first got it and now. next thing to do on the list is the interior door panels and seat covers, and also lower it a bit and fix my gas tank sending unit(i think i just have to fix a wire, i have no idea how much gas is in there!)

Sorry for the momentary thread derail here---

What's the problem with your gas gauge?

just the wire somwhere along the line, so i might as well just drop the tank and replace either the whole unit or the wires. I should replace all the wiring from the rear end(theres like 8 wires maybe) to the front. The lights work but the wire is a little brittle so i should just redo them all. The gas gauge did work but i believe this summer of driving around shook something loose.

It would be interesting to try a set of L31 heads from a 350 vortec on your 283. These heads have really good flow and outperform most aftermarket aluminum heads.A special intake is required but readily available. A mild roller cam and duels would spin a 283 really nice.
