I'm not positive on that Carl. l have it in my head I saw somewhere that front belts and rear belts were each their own separate option. That could have been earlier than 65 though.

Correct. And the seatbelt anchor points were installed front and rear as far back as '62, I think.

Hahaha, thanks for saving my butt. If my parents were alive (both had been teachers at some point in life and had perfect spelling!) they would have been on my case for that one!

Ah, we don't need to order rear belts, Ethel. The kids will have fun bouncing off the back of the front seats.

Not in Manitoba anyway. Not sure how each province handles it.

I just checked to see where you are from and I see you are here!

I would offer this as proof if they give you action.

If you get into an argument, contact me and I will check into it at our dealership in the book. I would say I offered proof right above though that it doesn't need them.

Gord just to jump in here,my 64 Catalina has the mounts from factory in front only. What's the deal with the safety??? in spring, are you selling it then or is it a mandatory thing. Here in Ontario, the cars only get safety when changing owners, hence alot of "crap" being driven & only get taken off the road when a "blitz" is on & they get caught!!!!   Pete

Back to the topic at hand-

I started the seat belt debate in the coffee room at our dealership today and could not get a firm answer from the techs and service guys. There was a variety of opinons on it. I hope to check in the book at work one day, maybe it's clear.

Here in Saskatchewan, only what was original... My '53 Bel-Air and '51 Chev 1-Ton has no belts nor signals and they don't have to. I purposely drove into an RCMP stop here in town and a young cop pointed me over... By the time he got to the window, I cut him off at the pass and pointed out there was neither in the truck and it didn't have to be!!! He mumbled something about not showing all of my rear license plate and that was that!!  Good-day!!!

On the belt subject.
I have a habit of driving without a wallet all the time, and in the 67' with no shoulder belts the wife actually gave me a pointer that makes sense.

Quote; You're nuts to drive that car without your wallet, some young cop with no knowlege of a time when there was no 3 point belts is going to pull you over thinking he has a easy seatbelt fine and you'll be a wise ass until you remember you don't have it, and he'll be the one laughing in the end when he gives you a $180 fine for not having the licence and reg... plus whatever the flippin' "victim surcharge" will be.

I carry it nowblankstare

each province sets the rules, highway traffic act and regulations (ontario)

seat belt regs are based on "motor vehicle saftey act" (canada)

meaning provincal governments set rules using federal law as guide lines.

in ontario if it came with it, they are required to remain. i believe anything

66 and newer has belts standard front and rear, but not in every position

ie, the middle passenger seat front and rear doesnt have a seat belt. my

own 66 as an example of this. So if the car was ordered with optional belts

in the front or back before they were standard equipment they must remain

but u are not required to install them after the fact. Not sure how optional

equipment could be verified on the side of the road. VIN assist used by the

police has very limited info and almost useless on old cars pre 73, the year

ontario changed to a plate to owner system from the old plate to car system

used before that. Also the wearing of the supplemental shoulder portion of the

seat belt assembly on pre 74 cars is not required, lap portion only.

its hard to get solid answers on any safety/equipment issues because

the rules are clear as mud at best.  But basically the seat belt regs will be based on
what the Vehicle Safety Acts says for the year of manufature for safety equip. And if

your sitting in a seat with a belt u gotta use it, in my case i have 6 seats and

four belts, so the 2 middle seat passengers  are free to be sent flyin.

also if the car was without belts originally and was ever modified to include them

then must remain or be reinstalled if u took them out.. i have a copy of the book

if anyone needs help sleeping

I had a 52 chev pickup, with VW bucket seats installed with the VW seat belts, I asked a cop friend of mine if I have to wear them because the truck never had seatbelts originally....He said, "If they're installed" you have to wear them. I asked what if I took them out, He told me "they're not there, you don't have to install them"
