THIS MORNING WHEN I TRY TO START MY CAR I CANT DO IT BECAUSE I CAN NOT SHIFT I THINK I GOT STOCK ON REVERSE AND I DO NOT WHAT TO DO TO REPAIR THIS ANY HELP WILL BE WELCOME I HAVE A GUY COMING THIS WEEKEND TO BUY THE CAR BUT IF THIS PROBLEM PERSIST I THINK I CAN`T SELL IT SO ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATE THANK YOU
Standard or auto. If its a standard the linkages might be jammed if its on the tree just go under the hood and wiggle thimgs around . If its a standard on the floor pull the shifter off and see if every thing is in line some times they jam. I had 75 GMC and it would jam up all the time (floor shift). On my wagon only once has it jammed(column shift)

Had that problem with my 60 Biscayne(3 speed column shift) Got stuck in gear and wouldn't come out....Try some WD-40 in the column. Lift the rubber around the shifter, and spray in there. It worked for mine.

Its a 50's Hydromatic? there is a way when you forget and leave it in reverse, but if I remember its a pita to get it back to neutral. I will find out how and let you know as soon as I can. This is one for those who own a 50's hydromatic. If you leave it in reverse and forget to put it back to neutral when you turn the car off It will get stuck in reverse. there is not "park" postion on these transmissions. You must allway leave it in neutral and use the parking brake much like a standard vehicle.
If you mean 3 speed on the column, try putting it in neutral on the column. Get is as close as you can there. Then go out under the hood and line up the levers that stick out of the column. That may work. I know it worked well on the GM's in the 60's that did that.

Ok three on the tree. Omit my message about Hydromatic's. I had a problem a while back where it jambed up on me and it was this. http://www.nationalchevyassoc.com/shop-online/product/868.html This part is meant for my 54 but you may have something very similar. But that might not be your problem. I think Carl's answer might just do the trick to get you going again. Rod

I found a pic that should resemble the shift linkage that you have. From left to right, the first link bar is for your second and third gears. the second link bar is for your first and reverse gears. If you try and move the second lever( first and reverse) you should be able to pull it back into neutral.
WELL I HAVE THE CAR ON NEUTRAL BUT STILL NOT WAY TO START IT I CALL THE LAST OWNER TO TAKE A LOOK OR WHATS GOING ON WITH THIS MATTER BUT, HE TOLD ME THAT MY STARTER WAS NOT WORKING PROPERLY, THAT I NEED TO CHANGE THE BENDIX OF MY STARTER, WELL I DO NOT WHAT ANY COMMENTS ARE WELCOME ALSO THANK YOU FOR YOU TIPS ON THE GEAR SHIFT IT WORKS WELL

Bendix for your car:
OEM (GM) 1932188
Standard Motor Products SDN2
Delco Remy D-2003
Accurate 3-204
Whichever of these you can find, that will do it.
Took me a LONG time to get this sorted out, but now my starter works OK.
At least in Canada you don't have to deal with parts guys not understanding about the differences compared to American Pontiacs and the similarities to Chevys

OH but you do have to tell them or you will land up with a US Pontiac part. The older parts guys know what you are talking about but the young ones look at you like your out of your mind

I have to be careful at work when I use the parts catalogues. I know which one to look up, depending what it is i.e. chassis parts, use the Impala book, etc etc.
However, you are right guys, 99% of the parts guys have no idea, including some of the older guys.

Alex, If your car is a 283 a lot of starters will fit. I would take the old one off and take it to the local auto wreckers and get a match up.
I'm pretty sure it's a 261 which is what my part numbers are for ...
But you are right eeluddy about taking it off and going to the rebuilder's with it, when I had mine rebuilt I relied upon the part numbers and the guy chose the wrong one, all it did was grind, so I had to go back to him and have him fish the original one out of the trash can and make him comare it to the one he put in and, oh my, werong one, have to fix it ... hope you can avoid that kind of problem.
Dave
