cleaning off the dust

DSC02297.jpgDSC02296.jpgDSC02294.jpgDSC02293.jpgI  started  a  frame off rebuild on  my  283/ glide  SD   back in  '93 ,   and  had  it  driving in  about  '98.     Yes, I cut  up  an  original  ,  but at  the  the time  I   liked the big  and  little  look  .    The    1/4's  ,  inner /  outer fenders,  and  trunk  pan all needed  replacement  so  it  added  fuel  to the fire  of  removing  the rusty metal  and  adding tubs.
Of course if  I was  to  do  it all over  again , I would  do it more  to  a  stock  appearance,  and  keep  a  back  seat.  I  still think  it  looks  pretty nice though,  and  it  is  quite  interesting  to  drive.
I am starting the   rebuild of the  rear  supension  due  to  cracks , and  making it more  street friendly.  Any  advice  would  be  appreciated.
Thanks!DSC02292.jpg

I just bought a  new Hobart  187  mig  to  get  crackling  on the next  faze of  the  car.  I am going to  replace the  15.5 x29  mickeys  on  12"  wide  rims    with  325-60-15  drag  radials  on  10"  wide  rims.
I am  tossing the spool  and  35  spline  axles  in  favor  of  a  31 spline  Trutrac  posi   carrier.  I am  thinking  i  might  have  room to  mount  the coilovers  outboard of the frame rails  as  the  radials  will be  slightly  narrower. That will  make  room  for  a  better  exhaust  system  over  the  axle.
The biggest thing to overhaul  is   the  ladder  bars .  They  cause  too much suspension binding on  the  street ,(  cracked  axle  tube) so  I am hoping that new  ladder  bars  with big  eurethane   bushings  instead of  spherical  rod  ends  will  flex  better.     I could  go  4-link  but it's  more  complicated to  tune, and  I would  probably  have  to   cut into  the  rear floor  area  to  fit the  front  brackets  .

Welcome. I dunno, 4 link is the way to go, alittle more work to set it up, but man will it hook!

I recomend the Art Morrison Enterprises. He is a renowned suspension guru here in the States. His work is impeccable. He is just now completing Chevelle suspension development. This is noted on the following website.  (www.artmorrison.com) Check it out and give Art a call. He is located in Fife, WA near Tacoma.

One more welcome.

As others have said, hate to see an original SD cut up, but you truly do have a beautiful car!

my buddy with a 67 lemans ( a-body) is running a home made trailing arm with pan hard, basically it's the triangulated suspension out of 70 chevy 1/2 ton. a fairly simple installation. there is a company out there that sells the basic kit, see them advertised in classic truck mags.

I can say this ...it hooks and handles like no other a-body I've been in. he's running a 500HP 455 with a tremec 5 spd and 3.41 gears...It's NUTS !!!!

food for thought....makes my stock 67 GTO feel pretty 'soft'

Congratulations on your beautiful '66, and for keeping it all these years. Looks mean in black.  I love that body style.

I'm of the opinion that, within reason, some tasteful modifications are a good thing. We only get to live once. May as well go for the gusto.

I've made a number of changes to mine, and have never regretted it. I'm a NCRS guy's nightmare.

Very nice ride. Will be doing the same sort of stuff on my sons 67 camaro. He wants ladder bar but I have been advising 4 link. That low profile four link kit looks interesting.

Beautiful  vette!              After  having a  car  so   long  the  thought of  switching it  up  a  bit  does   cross  my  mind occasionally      I like  the  wide  tires  ,  but the weld wheels  are  very  common   . I  like  the copo  dog  dish hubcaps look  on  widened  steelies  .  I know  as  soon  as  I get this  beast   on the   road  again  I will not   want to  change   the  look  at  all  biggrin

Welcom aboard! I would go 4 link for shure the set up is not the hard and I think art morison actually sells a great little how to book. That is one bad a$$ looking car, I love to cut things up and build them the way I like dont really care for stock stuff but I do appreciate nice resto's you car looks great! The copo wheels would be a nice touch real stealthy, the 455 is a a great torque monster, some day id like to build a 472 caddy motor and shoe horn it into a gremilin.

Thanks,   I had a  spare instrument cluster  and  dash  to  experiment with.  It  was  quite  alot of   work  but I managed  to  fit  it  all up  there.  I   like  the guages  to  be  mostly  hidden.  If you look  close   you  can  see the  factory  radio faceplate  with  the  huge  am  radio  guts  removed .  I installed  toggle  switches  for  fans  /  line  lock  where  the  radio  dials  used  to  be. I might  get   a  shift  light  and  mount it  behind the  radio  faceplate  glass.
