Points eliminator conversion?

Almost ready to purchace a points eliminator kit for the 67'. If there's one thing that made sense to me, was the set and forget nature of a breakerless ignition system.

I looked and compared them all.

First was the Pertronix Ignitor I.
A good simple unit with a mixed reliability reputation. Tons sold, the leader in retrofits. Needs a distributor removal, and a new igition 12v hotwire for power. $100.

Then the Crane XRi unit.
Built in rev limiter (won't ever need). $75

Finally the Accel 2010 Points eliminator kit.
Cheap at $59, uses the factory resistance wire and no dist removal required. Seems like the one to go with. Nothing at all fancy, but Accel to some spells "mixed quality" Mallory makes an identical looking unit for about the same price.

Might add a new stock looking coil, and I'll for sure buy a new set of (date coded) plug wires. The plan is to keep it looking totaly factory underhood.

Any thoughts on Accel or these kits guys?

People who wear hats when driving are to be avoided at all cost. I take food and water in my car and my only tool is a cell phone plugged into the ciggy lighter! I've had enough of my bailing wire and duct tape days. I'm a modern traveller lol!

That Accel does look like a Mallory unit. I used the Mallory unit with no problems back in around 1974. Its amazing its still available today. I remember that it was easy to install.

Mark. I've got the Crane unit in mine, set a 5500 rpm, no problems with this unit. Have heard a couple of stories on Pertronix of failures at the side of the road. They now keep a set of points & cond with them. I also keep a set in the glove box, but never had to use them!!!

Has anyone here had a failure with Pertronix? I want to change over to a breakerless system and I've not had good luck with Accel stuff before.

Maybe I'll try the Accel kit. it's pretty cheap to replace. Maybe keep a spare in the glove box the same as the old Chrysler products when I kept a spare ballast resistor at all times.

I like the fact there's no need to run a new 12 ignition switched hotwire. It would be no biggie to run one, but I want this car to look as close to stock underhood as possible. I've seen the Accel replacement modules for as cheap as $35.

A friend of mine did a Pertronix I kit in his 65' TBird 390, he claims it seemd to start far better and had a little more go than with the points.

From what I've read Earl, most conversion failures seem to come from using a coil with incompatable resistance, or not correctly powering the unit. Pertronix claims over one million sold of the Ignitor I unit, so I can't see how anyone could go wrong with the type of driving we subject our old cars to.

I converted my Spitifire to Pertronix. Ran like a completely different engine. Even my wife commented on how well it ran.

I have had a Pertronix unit in my  73 VW for about five years with no problems. It starts and runs better than the point system.

i converted 3 of my old bikes over to dyna s electronic ignition over 12 years or more. one of them close to 20 and not a mishap. i'm a firm believer in eletronics over points. i used to keep a spare set of point in my tool box. i even run a hei in the 55 on the 283 now.
