65 Beaumont tranny mount alignment


Helping a friend putting in an engine into a 65 Beaumont. The tranny mount and the holes in the crossmember are 3/4 inchs out of line. Thought we had the wrong crossmember but got one out of a parts car that we know is correct and it is still 3/4 of an inch out. He says he has the correct motor mounts and tranny mount so what is the problem? Any one else have this happen?

327 M20. Tranny needs to be back 3/4 of an inch. Cross member is in the correct middle holes on the frame rails so it can`t move forward.

i imagine you have the proper transmission for that year of car

i had a senerio when i put a turbo 400 into my 65 sedan
all i did was unbolt the crossmember and moved it forwards or back to where it would bolt to the transmission tail peice properly . there should be extra holes in the frame,if not drill  some new ones
support trans with a  little jack and 3/4 inch plywood to cover pan area of your transmission
 take crossmember out , lower jack so transmission  will  hang down just below frame
bolt up crossmember to trans mount ,jack it up to frame ,align crossmember to where ya want it and mark your hole to be drilled , after holes are drilled unbolt crossmember from transmission and put crossmember back in insde frame area align with new holes &bolt up, bolt transmission mount to crossmember.

this worked for me   biggrin

It is the correct 65 tranny so the holes should line up. I thought they were the same but is a 4 speed crossmember the same as a 2 speed glide?

Any chance the engine side mounts are in the wrong holes on frame up front???  Was this car a V 8 before???  If engine is sitting too far forward, everything else will be too.  Just a thought???

Here is a photo of a V-8 mount that overhangs the crossmember towards the front by ruffly a 1 1/2" and has a 2 1/2" pad. If you measure from the passenger side peak of the firewall to the back off the mount it is 19 1/2". The holes are not adjustable but it sounds like you have the wrong motor mounts. Yes the 4 spd crossmember is the same as the PG.

Paul, we have two 65 frames that had v8s and they both measured the same and look like the ones in your picture. We measured both from the front of the frame. Got to be something we are missing.confuse

Have you tried the driveshaft for length?

Of course I am assuming you have a driveshaft you know to be the correct length.

Remember when I was putting the "1st" Muncie in my car?  no ?  lol    I had it in place, and the driveshaft would not go in the tailshaft of the Muncie..  

The "second"  Muncie was built with a different tailshaft/mainsgaft and fit great...
  No thats not the problem, as the cross member fit and so did the mount  etc   hmmm  I'm STUMPED.

I have seen small blocks on big block mounts and vice versa,  and that affects how they"sit" 

but not normally affects the overall  length

Do you happen to have any pictures of it? I know it's a long shot but maybe that will trigger something?

As far as I know, only two choices with threaded holes. The one fits TH400, the other one Muncies, powerglides and TH350.

Do you have a powerglide. Measure from the belhousing back to centre of mounting holes on the mounts. Then measure the m20 from the belhousing back to its mounting holes. See if there is a differance.

Yep, same crossmember for powerglide, th350 and muncie. Same location also

The drive shaft should be the same length for powerglide, th350 and muncie. One size fits all

Maybe your crossmember is bent. If you add the stock drive shaft length, the motor and trans length and it fits then the cross member is bent or wrong. If the tranny has the wrong tailshaft housing then you also find this out. Measure you brothers 64 rag because it will be the same. If not I can measure any of my cars. Just let me know what measurements you want.

Paul, can you take a measurement from the centre of the hole in the main crossmember to the centre of the slotted holes in the tranny crossmember

It's 34" from the center of the top two smaller holes on the engine crossmember to the front of the transmission crossmember mounting pad. The transmission mounting bolt holes are ruffly a inch behind that, so 35"

I used the measurement Paul gave me and it was bang on. I asked another owner of a 65 Beaumont 4 speed to measure the front of his tranny to the mount holes and it was different. He came to look and had a good laugh. We were using an empty 325 front case and a 429 tail shaft. There is a spacer that goes between themdoh
