Springs dont fit.


Carquest ordered and sold me springs for my 67 GP.  I popped out the old, and of course the arent even close.  I have the receipt and the new springs and they wont take them back for any reason without the boxes. (deep breathing).  I usually pick my battles wisely, but they picked the wrong man on the wrong day.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated for my to shop for new ones. I will be carrying the old ones with me next time.

  I should have some pics soon with serious progress. Held up by Carquest for now.

I am betting they ordered for a 67 Grand Prix (US model) which wouldn't be anywhere close, as you say.

Order for a 67 Caprice and you will be fine.

Pretend you have lifted the whole body of your car up in the air. Anything remaining on the ground is Chevrolet B body. Whenever you order parts for what remains on the ground must be ordered for Chevrolet, and Caprice, Impala would pretty much all be the same.

Do you have the part number of what they ordered for you?

You are correct. Some of my initial input with Carquest may have lead us in the direction of ordering the wrong springs, but my lack of certainty was more than obvious and they knew I was relying solely on them to be correct. Its no big deal for me to go exchange them. I expected an apology and a rush order on the correct ones, but was basically told 'sux to be you'.  Receipt didnt matter, but he needed a box.  If he would just give me the correct springs, I'd have a nice new box for him.  I half expect errors with a less common car, but didnt expect that the error would cost me. I'll be alright now that I've vented. I have followed up with head office and I'll see where that gets me, but I cant hold the project up for long.

   Thanks for the Caprice/Chevrolet info. Any info is new and valuable  to me, and very much appreciated.  I'd never be where I am with this project without this site, and will support through any merchandise available once I am buttoning up the finishing touches.  I dont have the part# handy but here is a pic. Tks again.

update - local manager called. Wants to know what I want.  He says he cant get 67 Caprice springs anywhere in their chain. Wants me to try elsewhere and he'll consider a refund if I give him my new box. It seems he doesnt want to find springs, but wants to tell head office that he is taking care of me.

If I had  that kind of problem, with my local parts store (and I do deal with that company)   I would drive to the same store in Goderich (12mi) Exeter (18mi) Mitchell (20mi) etc.    and get a set of springs and do the box exchange... 

If you were closer, I would get you the right springs at Car Quest and get them to you...

Stone', The generic 67 Caprice springs are easily available for you, but beware... you'll not likely get the exact factory specified rate for your Gp. You'll be close and they'll work, but there's a real good chance you could end up with the car sitting way too high. Understand, there is a million different rates out for these cars and one spring couldn't possibly cover every option weight and performance requirement. With a little research (and 427Carl's help) you can find the exact Moog replacement spring #'s for your car. These master parts catalogue scans below decode the exact GM code and part #'s, front and rear for the rate that your car would require. If you can't get the Moog part anymore, and you're willing to wait and spend a little more, Detroit Eaton Spring can reproduce these springs exactly to the GM spec.

So from what I know of your Car.

1967 Grand Parisienne 2 Door HT 76657 (-57)
283 with Powerglide
No air
No F41
No heavy/extra duty parts.


Front, you'll need the CB code. Part # 3864715
Rear                            JE code. Part # 3862984


Interesting how in the rear spring preamble it mentions that for all the 766 series(Gp) cars, the springs are spec'd as HD.

PM Carl and he'll cross reference these codes to the Moog #'s.

they are at "my" Car Quest,

although the ones I got for my Ventura were ACDELCO which my young counter man crossed numbers for me    and the springs were perfect!!!

p.s.  I always look up the numbers before I go in...  lol

That chart is excellent Mark. It's amazing how many different springs GM used.

I think you will find for the rears that the aftermarket likely has maybe or 4 numbers to cover all those. If nobody else can help you, AC Delco also markets them so find a local supplier for AC. Usually their price is competitive too.

Neither number is even recognized in the GM system any more.

One more thing about GM springs. I've never bought new GM springs in my life because they are typically double the price. I always buy AC Delco, Moog and in the old days, TRW.

I'm off to another big chain local supplier with my newly acquired info and the old spring.  I am expecting to pay $200.00 plus tax, wait 2-3 weeks, and hope they fit. The Carquest dealer is waiting to hear how I make out. I am somewhat at their mercy, but thats nothing new. I dont detect a lot of confidence with anyone except here.  If a generic spring made the ride higher that would be even better, assuming its not ridiculous.

You ordered front 396 springs? I did that on my 66 years ago with a small block and found it a bit too high. It never came down enough to look proper, so I put a 427 in!

I've only been discussing rear springs, sorry for the confusion.  According to the dealer, the only 67 caprice springs that would fit were for a 396, the 283 didnt exist in his system.  I assume rear springs for a bb are also more robust. The dimensions were exact so I took a chance. Rear only. I'll torch a coil if its too tall. 

   Carl, I love your solution to the front end riding high. Maybe if my tail is too high,  I can put the 283 in the trunk for a spare and put in a 409.

That reminds me of when I had my 60 Catalina. I ordered an idler arm from "Pre-60's" (they advertise in old auto). The one they sent me was totally wrong. I sent it back and they held back $75 on my credit card as a restocking charge! I called the owner and flipped on him and he wouldn't budge. Visa was no help either. As far as I'm concerned they stole $75 from me.
