The plug that goes into the reg,has 4 wires right?Take some connecters and a few inches of wire and connect the two outer wires together and the two inner wires together.(this bypasses the reg.)then get a factory alt.plug with some wire still on it from the internal reg. alt. and splice it into your cars harness (near the alt.)Cant remember which of the  2 small wires is for powering up the alt. and which one goes to your idiot light.the big red wire is obvious.thats pretty much all it takes.

I like the description at this site. Note that he shows the white wire as yellow (or it wouldn't show up against the white background).

so would a person leave the old regulator in place, just do the wire mod and run his 3 wire alt with reg built in, and hopefully everything works out?

This has been a topic that has been discussed many a time on here. I have done this with most of my cars and having a background with GM for 20 odd years with electrical being a favorite, this is a very simple procedure, really!

As in the pic above, you can jump or join the brown (ign) and blue at the regulator. (I leave the regulator in place if it was there) At the alternator, remove the blue terminal from old existing plug and insert it into the #1 slot of the the newer style plug as shown. (Hopefully you are aware of how to remove the terminals from the connectors and if not, ask and if so, please disregard!) I never touch the 2 center wires of the regulator plug. Just leave them be!

If you have some harness from the new style plug, the #2 slot, I as well as alot of '80's GM vehicles, just loop this larger red wire to the battery stud on the back of the alternator. Then just add the existing red wire that you removed from the old alternator with the eye loop and bolt that to the battery stud along with the #2 looped wire.

It is that easy........ Also, here is the link to a previous post.........
