I'll be having a dual exhaust system installed on my 67 Grand Parisienne in a week or so. Aluminized 2 1/2", "H" pipe (crossover) and tailpipes all the way to the back.
I'm looking to give the car just a little bit of attitude. Nothing really loud, but not so hushed as to make no sound at all. Somthing in between. Perhaps slightly mellow and mild when at cruise speed, then some bark when I get on it.
I'm sure the exhaust shop will get me any muffler I'd like.
Any thoughts on what fit my bill? Any other exhaust talk and thoughts welcome.

This is brought over from your other post about shocks, and I will add a couple more thoughts at the end:
"Dual exhaust will be a huge improvement for sure. My only question to you would be, have you heard the Magnaflow mufflers? They have a very unique sound and I wouldn't call it "old school". I have Magnaflows on my G8 and Flowmasters on my daily driver 96 Caprice and Dynomax on the 95 Impala SS. All have a different sound. I would say the the most classic car sound of all of them comes from the Flowmasters. They are not pretty but they do sound nice. The Magnaflows are beautiful when you crawl underneath for a peak but they also give off the most drone in the car at cruising speeds. The Dynomax have served me well for 9 years on the Impala SS and they sound pretty nice too. Not trying to point you away from the Magnaflows at all but I just wanted you to know they do sound quite a bit different from the other two brands I have tried."
Another thing about the Magnaflows is that they may sound different depending on the application. The G8 doesn't have a tailpipe, so to speak. The mufflers are at the very back of the car and have a factory looking twin tip out the original openings. They are a factory replacement cat-back kit. There might not be a drone if they were on a car with a tailpipe??? I did keep my factory exhaust and have debated putting it back on because I hate the drone. I have been told that if I were to extend the tips past the back of the car slightly, I might lose the drone.
The Dynomax and the Flowmasters don't seem to drone but they can be heard in the car when you push the "smile pedal" really hard. Both those cars have tailpipes out the back with the resonators removed. The SS (Dynomax) has Tri-Y headers, cat-delete, and H-pipe. It did get louder when the cats were removed, no question about it. The Caprice has complete GM factory exhaust with the Flowmasters and long tailpipes out the back without resonators. I would call the Flowmaster sound the most tame but the car has manifolds and cats which I truely believe help to muffle the sound.
As for listening to cars over the internet to get an idea.... I wish everyone luck with that because it's just not the same as the real thing. I think the best bet is to talk to guys at cruise nights and show & shines, listen to their cars and even get them to take you for a ride plus have them do a drive by. Plus everyone has a different ear for what they like to hear. I personally don't care for the glasspack rap and I prefer the sound of the old Corvette turbos as I have heard them called. A nice deep tone which opens right up when you try to push your right foot through the firewall

Hi Mark. I have 3" stainless pipes from front to back with dual stainless Magnaflow mufflers. I will never get any thing else. They perr like a kitten while cruising, and roar like a lion when you step on it. I love them. Leo
Too each their own, I'm running "Cherry" OVALS on the 64 Catalina, they have a nice rumble on idle[not loud] & purr at 60MPH. They are not loud by any means but you know theres a engine there when you hit the "LOUD PEDAL" NO BLATTING or excessive noise!!!

I have Dynamax 2 1/2 bottles on my 64 custom sport with tailpipes, it cruises mellow , and barks with the 4 bbls.
I do love the flowmaster american thunder series, money well spent, run them on my muscle car
I have 3" Dynamax race bottles on my 33 Coupe , BBC with 3" pipe all the way to the back .. no insulation inthe car, tin can interior......you can not hear yourseld think, the car can be heard for 3 miles when you punch it .....IT's great ,, a little droony at 65 mph ,, but at 85 mph it sings a pretty tune...

Great luck in the new system Mark David, you & I have "REAL" Pontiac engines in our Catalina's There are places "Stateside" that have Exhaust for REAL Pontiacs [ Boy I'm gonna get some Flac on this one] just remember that the Cdn. Pontiac is sitting on Chevy under pinings, whereas ours are on a different chassis & d/line etc.

What I meant was a performance Pontiac engine At least a four barrel, or tri power or 2 4's Im barley pumpin out 300 horse Thats why Im going to run glass packs, make its bark meaner than its bite If I were to rebuild engine, make it a real good hi perf Pontiac motor Then I would not use the glass packs B-Body USA Ponchos are natouriously fickle when it comes to exhaust manifolds and headers especially when you have a colum shift
As far as Canadian Poncho's, I am so intreagued by the Canadian Poncho, I have read alomst every thread I knew they were different but I did not know they were really really different Cant wait for some Pontiac Shows in Southern Ontario I see from your picture you have stock manifolds in your poncho?
Hey Mark, I had a chance to go for a short rip in the G8 with the magnaflows and I have to admit it is my favourite sounding car. I will likely put up with the drone a while longer. They have the nicest purr when you cruise at 3000rpm or more. The problem with the G8 is that it is revving quite low at 110 k/mph. This is were the drone is. Anytime the RPM is above 2500rpm, the drone is gone. Your car will likely rev above 2500 on the freeway, so I wouldn't be scared of the drone.
Like I said in another thread, I like the performance mufflers from Waldrons (of course you can buy their "DCE" mufflers that open to a straight pipe at the flick of a switch..)

This is a pretty good representation of what the G8 magnaflows sound like. They have a real purr. You can also hear the drone at lower RPM in this video.

They really do sound sweet Todd. Exactly how I'd like mine to sound at idle. I'll check Waldrons out.

I agree, i have 3" all the way to those polished thrush fully welded two chambers with turndowns and it sounds pure evil....i get compliments all the time, might be a little loud for some but at 3g's on the highway it's not bad at all....

3 inch with TURN DOWNS! You must be American only place you see trundowns(USA) Here in Canada we must have full tailpipes for safety certification
Is there not a internet site, in United States, for REAL pontiacs???
