Seems like a dumb question, but I can't see why my replacement power steering pump doesn't work at idle or low speed.I bought a reconditioned pump at a recent swap meet and,as my old pump was an original but working fine I thought that I'd replace it with my new found treasure.Easy change as all the brackets were on,etc but when I fired the car up
and backed out of garage, found it really hard to steer, just like manual. But the faster I went, better steering was.Even when I stopped and revved motor to 2500 rpm,no power steering.I put about 1/2 Lucas power steering stop leak and 1/2 STP power steering fluid in.(old pump had about same mix).Belt seems tight.Any ideas out there?...Thanks....Wayne
you could have air in the system. Put the car up on stands and manually turn the wheels lock to lock. Keep checking the fluid and have the cap loose. Then start engine, shut off immediately, check fluid. I have had this problem but mostly with the hydrovac style pump.
All power steering pumps have a relief valve and spring under the pressure fitting. Make sure the spring is there, the o-ring is on the relief valve and the valve is set correctly. You may want to take the valve and spring out of your old pump and put them in if they were working. It is a good idea to put a new o-ring on the valve when you install it.

I think Brad's on the right track here. Yrs. ago I had a 51 Merc. P/Up w/Chevy pwr. I put a Chrysler Volare frt ent in it & had to change out the relief valve in back of pump!!! Chrysler uses same pump but has diff. relief valve, took out GM valve & installed Chry. valve, worked PERFECT
