My manual showed up in the mail today, hooray. Not bad only 3 days in the mail and it's here.So i started doing some reading and the first question i have is what oil are you running.According to the manual a 10w would be about right.Same with the trans and rear end, what oil?Thirdly i was just thinking the other day that these old cars ran on leaded gas.Does a guy have to add a lead additive everytime he fills up,what octane,i assume a 87 octane will work.
Brian, Id run 10w30 or 10w40 but make sure it has Zinc in it, if not use a Zinc addititive eg. Lucas etc. Newer oils don't have the zinc that you need for older engines to protect the camshaft & lifters. Run your high test or Premium but I would also use a "lead additive there as well for your valve seats if you haven't put in the "hardened" ones!!!

Just what dualquadpete said! 10 w 30 and don't use synthetic, add Zinc. Because we have solid lifters, not hydraulic ones. Zinc is your best friend.
The reason we use a higher grade fuel is because of the timming of the engine, it tends to run nicer on higer revs for long runs on the highway less chance of denotation, which is bad.
Thank everyone for the advice.I will have a look at the local parts stores and see if i can find a zinc additive for the oil and some lead additive for the fuel. The gasket kits should be here this week sometime so hopefully can get it back together and running in the next few weeks.
Zinc Dialkyl Dithio Phosphate (ZDDP) was an engine oil additive that the EPA deemed harmful to catalytic converters and thus forced oil refiners to eliminate it from their motor oil formula. There are additives on the market, including a product that Dennis Kirban developed for about $10 a bottle. Educate yourself at the link below.
I use 10W30 oil with STP Oil Treatment, which contains ZDDP. I contacted STP 2 years ago to find out the concentration of ZDDP in their product, but they told me it proprietary information. I figured some ZDDP is better then none.
i like royal purple some car came into the auto shop with it in for like the first oil change in 7 months and it look really good still and felt very nice
