LS9 1975 Chevrolet ? what HP rating?

I was looking at my mobile storage shed  , a 1975 chevy sport van, the RPO tag lists the engine as a LS9 ? I can't find any reference to HP on the net, seems to be a 1 year only code , other the new version?  I was happy to see it also has a M40 ( T400).

the thing runs like a top , my uncle who I bought it from was a master mechanic, kept it running strong,  They quite driving it due to health and the van was rusting out .  My uncle wanted a token fee for the van ....I'm a big spender !!! It cost me another $20 to take the mouse infested camping matress to the dump !!

LOL !

I went out to find the suffix code...NOT A CHANCE I'm going to see that without some major disassembly !!

nice to see that it looks to be a 4 bolt main block , not that I build HP that require it ,,just nice to know.

What series is your 1975 Sportvan? 10, 20 or even 30? The series 10 used a catalytic converter; vehicles with 6000+ lb. GVW (series 20 & 30) had less stringent emission standards and went without the catalytic converter.

According to the factory published 1975 literature the LS9 was conservatively rated at 160 net h.p. @ 3800 rpm; 250 lbs/ft (net) @ 2400 rpm. The block may or may not be a 4-bolt main; I would expect a 2-bolt main. Compression ratio was 8.5:1.

The M40 code was thrown around fairly lightly back in 1975 and was used to designate both the TH350 & TH400. Technically the TH350 should have been coded as an M38 & the TH400 as an M40 but they didn't want to do that for some unknown reason in 1975. Behind your LS9 I would expect a TH350 (there's nothing wrong with them; they are compact, light, durable, don't soak up a lot of horsepower and they perform well).
