63 Acadian Beaumont "Ratwagon" project

Last year I found this little gem after some searching for something lighter (and cooler) than the 82 Buick Regal I had.  The Regal had a 327 out of a 68 Caprice 4drHT followed up with a 200 4R and 3:42 posi.  It was definately a great ride but the Regal is a heavy car at 3800lbs with power everything and A/C.

This is the Regal.  It is pretty rare being 1 of 2022 Turbo Coupes from 82. This was just prior to the Grand Nationals.  I bought it without a drivetrain for cheap in 1996, dropped in a 327 and then made it into a family driver for about 8 years.

When I parked the Regal, it just went downhill from sitting outside and not being driven.  Fast forward to 2007 and I decided that I would like to make the Regal much faster.  Into the speed shop I headed and out I came with a complete Edelbrock topend kit (performer RPM heads, cam, intake, roller rockers, carb, MSD distributor, MSD box, MSD wires).  Ran great but even with 3:42 gears and 4spd automatic, it was in dire need of a high stall convertor and a lighter car.  Needless to say I was not happy with how this setup was working.  Highstall was installed next but that still didn't help the weight issue.  The search was on for an Acadian or a Nova.  I looked at quite a few cars over the next couple years but nothing had the right look or feel to it.  When I saw the wagon for the first time (http://edsprojectcars.com/project_cars_for_sale.htm) it just had that hotrod and sleeper feel to it.  I guess you could say that I could see the diamond in the rough.  And rough it is!  I don't think that this car was abused but I don't think it ever saw the inside of a garage in its life.  The thing that sold me was the fact that every piece of Acadian trim was on the car and I also knew that Carl had a solid front clip.  As well, when I bought it, the guy threw in some solid doors from a 62 4dr sedan.  All I would need is a tailgate and quarters to make it look good on the outside.

Since time is a factor for me and I'm not home enough in the winter to work on projects, I made a deal with Carl and his son to do the drivetrain swap for me last winter.  http://canadianponcho.activeboard.com/index.spark?aBID=118110&p=3&topicID=33055665
This summer I finally made my way back to Carl's place to pick up the Ratwagon as I have nicknamed it.

This is what it looked like when I got it home to Ab.

Now for some progress pictures of the front clip and doors getting changed.

Front clip and doors changed, it was now time to get some ratrod redneck exhaust pipes!

This is the way it looks right now.  I am currently waiting for new quarters, carpet and new seat covers.  I'll hopefully get some time to work on it again before winter but right now, my plate is full!

Pretty sure it is going to end up being gold....granada gold. I think it would look pretty sharp this color. I like the look of Canso_Dan's 65 Acadian with the gold paint and red guts.

Oh yeah, it runs very well biggrin!  I haven't had it out for a cruise but I have about 1/16 mile in front of the farm that is oiled for dust control and that is my test strip.  I can launch and just after I hit second gear, it's time to shut 'er down but it gives me an ear to ear grin!

Saw this little wagon at BJ in Orange County this summer.  A very nice color combo...

It was actually a very nice evening. I think it was around -3C. I was in coveralls and that was plenty warm. It was kinda fun doing that on a December night. Seems to me it was just a week or so before Christmas because after that night it went in a corner so I could start working on my own Acadian. We had a very easy winter. I don't think I had the snowblower out more than 2 or 3 times.

That thing sounds great with open headers!!!
