Door hinges

My doors are taking a little more effort to close as they must be sagging.  Are the hinges ajustable, or is replacing them with aftermarket hinges the better option?

thx

I'm sure those are the same hinges as GTO and there is a repro kit available with new bushings to rebuild those. I did my 64 GTO clone car before I sold it.

As opposed to replacing them? Sounds like a simple fix?...

It's not bad. Worst part is having the doors off but in my case the paint was stripped so no worries about chips. Once they are off, it's not a bad job at all and it sure tightens them up.

I got the kit from Ames but I'm sure lots of guys have them. Likely even our own NOS Reproductions here sells them and I have to say, dealing with them the one time that I did was pure pleasure compared to many repro parts houses.

Thanks for the heads up. I've just looked through a couple of Chevelle and GTO catalogues I have, and I see them. Sounds simple enough. Thanks for the steer (as always) Carl!

When I fixed the hinges on my 2+2, I ended up buying bushings and pins from the Crappy tire "help" rack. They were cheap. Just needed to shorten the pins.

I think on all the older GM cars the pins shared the same diameter, yes.

One reason I got the the kit was the roller on the detent unit (that holds the door open in those 2 locations) usually seizes up and is junk. The repro kit had new rollers in it.

Boy, as I type this I am thinking I may have bought an extra kit. I will look. If I did, it will be coming to you if I can find it.

I found what I have left. It's just the roller and the pivot pin for it. As suggested though, I think you can buy the other pins and bushings anywhere. As far as I know, the roller was only ever repro, never available as a GM part separate.

If you are only doing one hinge, just PM me your mailing address and I will mail you the roller and pin.

Thx for checking, and the offer Carl. However they're both pretty tired so I will do both of them. (Is ther a difference between the GTO and Cevelle ones?)

No, I am certain I went through all that research and all 66-67 A body hinges interchanged.

When you say they are sagging are you saying they aren't lining up right or is there play in them if you lift up on your door handle?  They definetely are adjustable.  I replaced my hinges with after market ones and I am very happy with them, they seem as heavy as the originals.  I can't remember what I paid but I didn't think it was out of line plus then everything on the hinge was new.  Just tape your door edge and your fender edge when you take your door off and you won't have any problem.

And I just checked the parts book and confirmed 66-67 A body hinges are all the same.

Also, if you decide to do bushings only, it's the same bushing up to 87 in the half tons. part # 9721917 and I'm sure any jobber store can interchange that number for you to their brand.

Good tip.  (I probably would have thought of that after the damage was done.)  Thx

Re all the A bodies being the same Carl, I'm glad they had the common sense to do that. LOL

Thx guys, I'm going to order some up for both doors!  (Your spare is safe Carl.)

I thought of him but I think the kit has 2 in it originally and his car likely needs both!

There are 2 different size bushings, standard and an oversize. Sometimes because of the wear you may need the oversize ones. They are cheap about .52 cents each where I work, 8 required for the 2 doors.

The quick and temporary fix is body shim C-shaped washers @ the bottom hinge bolts!.
Sometimes wotrth doing to save latch wear and paint chips before doing the whole bushing job thing..

Yes, I forgot to mention the oversize pieces. I stock them as well. Not too often we need them but sometimes if the pin has worn right through the bushing a replacement is sloppy.
