1966 Malibu SS 396 Convert/1967 Impala SS 427 Convert


I grew up in Winnipeg and purchased two rare convertibles both missing original engines. My Malibu SS 396 was sold new at Carter Chevrolet engine suffix T0105EF. I purchased the 1967 Impala SS 427 recently it was sold new at Courtesy Motors Sales in Winkler engine suffix T1208IE. Do any members know of where abouts of these engines?

Wow, you are searching for a needle in a large haystack my friend! Welcome to the site! Do you have any idea how many big block chevy engines have been produced? If your car is without a numbers matching block, join the club. It only seems to matter to a few guys. You can dress up any big block chevy to look like a 396 or 427 with a few period correct parts. If you do it right, it can appear correct for your car. I think if you wanted a numbers matching car, you would have to find the car and original drivetrain intact.

 That is a difficult search for sure but there is always hope. A friend of mine is restoring a 66 Sport Deluxe 396 car which did not have the original motor. 
 
He got the list of previous owners from the license office and started calling them. One of the previous owners was drag racing the car and he still had the original motor for the car in his shop. He said he changed the motor because it was starting to smoke.

 My friend was able to get the motor for a reasonalbe price and mate the motor back with the car.

 It is tough but never say never................

I purhased the 66 malibu ss 396 in 1989 in response to an auto trader ad. The car appeared to have gone through Autopac insurance as it had a crayon marking on windshield, car may have been stolen recovered. Engine trans were gone, including the sport steering wheel. The gentlemen that sold to me the car owned a business by the name of precision automotive. I have since located and purchased a complete engine with suffix T0107EF which is very close to my original T0105EF.
The 1967 Impala SS was sitting in field for in the Arnes/Gimili area for quite sometime which was very close to the speedway. Who knows maybe the engine got into the hands of a racer.

Every restoration shop and swap meet I've ever been to has for sale a sure fire method for getting the numbers matching engine.......stamping sets.

since we're on the topic,

the 396 was pulled out of my 68 SD around 84 in the Prince Albert SK area. It apparently was thunked into a chevy 1/2 ton ....

I have the docs..let me dig.

You are 100% correct about engine suffix multiple blocks can share the same number.  The only conflicts that can arise are when serial numbers are stamped into the engine pad which I have not seen on Canadian built chevelles.  I know of two more big block 66 chevelles in Calgary and we found an engine suffix stamped in an oil pan rail at bottom of block while rotating on the engine on the stand.

I have had a number 67 427 blocks (3904351) over the past few years. The early blocks had a week point by the back head bolts where the block was thin and cracked into the water jacket. Blocks were replaced with CE warranty ones. Its an easy fix now. The block design changed in Feb of 67. Not sure if the design changed helped. These blocks are the same ones put in the 67 Corvettes just a different suffix code. Hard to fined and not cheap.

Do you know any of the Impala history i.e. how long it stayed in the Winkler area? I have a couple of contacts there, one of them being the last parts manager at Courtesy Motors before it closed. If hte car stayed in the area any length of time maybe that would be a good place to start. However, if you know it left there long ago likely not much point in that.

Hello appreciate your help.  The gentlemen who sold me the car requested a buildsheet from GM Canada in May of 2003.  The story was the Impala was a field car sitting in his neighbors yard in Arnes, MB.  He does recall his neighbor's son actually driving the car until it found it's resting place in the yard.  I do not have any evidence to declare when the vehicle departed Winkler.  I will be taking some photos of the Impala to post in the next few days.   Options include:

hey we'll have to get our cars together once restored ! Two 67 Bolero red on white convertible 427 4speeds, one Poncho one Chevrolet. Mine is a T0105 IE block as well. Kinda wierd, same date code as your Chevelle.

That would be a fantastic site to see, I live in Calgary, where do you live?  I am pretty pumped up at the moment just got back in the house after spraying last round of clear coat on my 70 El camino SS turned real nice..... the second time around!  How long have you owned your Pontiac?

George Zapora sent me a letter with my buildsheet that states in 1967 in Oshawa plant only 43 Chevrolet Impala SS and Pontiac Parisienne 2+2 Convertibles were built with the L-36 engine.

I know a chap that has a real nice dark blue 66/67 Bonneville and I have watched it sit on the street for many years and the paint are starting to deteriorate.

Hey I'm only an hour and fifteen northeast of Calgary out at Three Hills. I would love to see that documentation from George on the builds of Pontiac and Chevrolet 427's. My doc from him states less than 13 2+2 convertible 4speeds but I have always wondered how many 67 Pontiac B body 427's there were in total. I have not found another but there must be some out there somewhere. Looks like you do some nice bodywork, I have a 66 SS396 chevelle too, US car that is waiting for a resto too.
Used to own another 66SS396 too, a no match 360hp 4spd 4.56 posi fact kneeknocker tach car and sold it like an idiot.... It was an EF too but a 4bolt block same as the 375 HP with the oil cooler ports etc,and a rare color Aztec Bronze, bronze interior with fact headrests. no p/s p/b
