Epoxy primer..

PPG  told me some time ago that there is NO more of the old DP primers. They told me it was replaced with the OMNI epoxy.Well we have been using it for some time now (even though it is NOT as GOOD) and now they tell me IT is no longer available...#$%^&%$$...Do we now just paint directly on bare metal....

Water based paint is whats coming now. You won't be able to do any paint work at the home shop from what I hear, need a lot of fans & dryers & heaters etc.

There are epoxies out there. DP is gone and OMNI is the economy line of PPG. Dupont has their epoxies in three valueshades, white grey and black. BASF Glasurit is coming out with one that is VOC compliant. Many of the paint manufacturers are working hard to come up with products that are fast, user friendly, and VOC compliant. Alot of good products have had to go the way of the  Dodo bird because of the lack of compliancy, hence waterborne. Everything is not doom and gloom though, anyone who has sprayed water never want to go back! It is a beautiful product. As if they had a choice, non VOC compliant products ceased production this last June. The scare tactics about cleanliness and extra equipment is not that bad. We always wanted good clean equipment in the first place to perform a quality paint job, so the transition could be as small as a new gun. There will have to be an epoxy or like product coming out as the collision/restoration industry needs a DTM (direct to metal) product to coat the insides of channels and frame rails from corrosion. Check your supplier or other paint suppliers to get the product you need and maintain using the one brand line throughout the job to maintain compatibility. DP and Omni are both PPG but not in the same line and may not be fully compatible.

One can still buy the old products till around the end of the year and then that is it. Manufacture of the products however is already against legislation.

Someday this will be looked back at like smoking.... Can't believe we exposed people to those fumes at work. Being a back yarder it is sad to see the old product disappear but... how many guys are out there exposing themselves to the solvents and improperly disposing of wastes.

I know I have several gallon cans of "waste solvents" waiting their trip to the recycler but I can't imagine everyone does it... it's a pain.

I also have friends that are career painters that have health issue due to long term exposures.
