327 question

A loooong time ago, I had a 1965 Nova, 2-dr hardtop. I forget (remember, I'm 61 now!), the model, I do know that it did not have SS emblems. But, bucket seats, gauge package, Muncie 4-speed and a 12-bolt posi rear. No modifications that I can remember (I bought it used, 55,000 miles, $1750) other than the good clutch, scattershield, 4.88 gears and hooker headers that I installed.
My question is, the 327 engine had double bump heads, 780 Holley on GM aluminum intake, and solid lifters. Was it possibly original, or, more likely, a corvette engine swapped in, ie: the '65 fuelie engine without the injection?
I don't believe there is anyway to track down the remains after almost 40 years. The car served me well during our street racing (on a back road) years, and left me on a trade for a 426 hemi SuperBee.
lmk, what you think, thanks, daryle.

I am certainly no Nova expert but the 327 with 300 HP was available in 1965. In 1964 the 283 was first introduce. There was a dealer installed V8 option program availble as well that would permit the small block to be put into 6 cylinder Chevy II's even including the 327 fuellie from the Corvette.

A 65 Nova could be had with buckets and gauge package but not without it being an SS. Of course, a hot rodder may have added that or the emblems had been deleted.

The solid lifters would not be original to a 65 Nova, nor the Holley and aluminum intake so it sounds like a custom build or as you say, an engine swap. The fuelie heads would have come on the 327 in a 65 Nova though.

Boy, any hope of you finding the serial number for that car? That would tell a lot about what it could have been when it was new.

In 1965 Chevy offered 2 versions of the 327 in the Chevy II; the 250 horse L30 & the 300 horse L74. Both are rare, especially the 300 horse version. Introduced late in the run only 319 were installed in the U.S.-built Chevy II. I would imagine in Canada they would have produced a handful.

In 1965 the 327 cars came with the new 12-bolt rears, even with a lowly 250-horse with a Powerglide. They retrenched for 1966 and 12-bolts generally weren't used behind 327s (except the L79s).

I understand there were exceptions to the 12 bolt rule and that is why you say "generally". There is a fellow from Edmonton who had the last Canadian built 67 Nova SS 327 4 speed car and it was a documented 12 bolt car. It has caused some stress amongst the US 67 owners who say "never"....!

Heres a 1967 Chevy II Nova  2 door harttop..
Ordered by fellow in town in '67
Bought by neighbor in 1969
Its sitting down the street   unrestored (never will be)  He just patches it, and drives it..
BUT has spin on oil filter, so I presume its a late build....
I got VIN from him..
He(owner) has never bought the Historical forms (in 41 years) from George 'cause hes super cheap.  and I am not paying the73.00 for him lol

Car is/was  327-275 - 4 speed Saginaw - Quadrajet - single exhaust - 12 Bolt - 3:08 - mono leaf -  bench seat - Muncie shifter.....

VIN  #  1163771105090

Carl, all Nova 283/327 engines from 64-67 have spin on filters. That is why I was so gung ho on getting a correct style block for my Acadian. A can filter is fine with an automatic but with a clutch rod running under the filter, you have to have a short spin on filter.

ok hmm  I was told wrong!  its obviously someone else fault! wink

It did have single exhaust and the 4 speed sag   went 80,000 miles
never broke it

He put a Muncie in it  (got it free) and broke it   haha
Saginaw just needs some bearings
Used a 327-350 horese rebuilt clutch from McKerlie Auto part for   years
we put 24 runs on it one morning at St Thomas
His wife ad I could power shift it
he couldn't   cause hes cheap   Did I say he was cheap......

He wants to keep car all original????  It needs floors, trunk, rockers, quarters, door skins, fenders, inner skirts, trunk lid, hood, and cowl repairs, roof might be saved, but it will be his "all original" car  right!  He will die, and car will rot in a garage..   Did I say he put tomato cans on his wifes car mufflers to fill holes?

Carl, is this guy cheap? rofl.gif

Yes, little trivia item there that the 64 Nova 283 would be the first Chevy small block ever to use a spin on oil filter.

The single exhaust makes sense on that car too. So does the 12 bolt. I'm told the Canuck 327 4 speed cars had them.
