Just another meaningless anniversary for me!!!

All day long I've been thinking "Nov 5th, Nov 5th, what is it about this day"?

Dates always stick in my mind and this one was stuck there, but I couldn't recall why.

On this day, 35 years ago, I bought my first 66 Grande Parisienne at age 18. I traded my 65 Canso Sport Deluxe and I think 40 bucks to get the GP. It was a 283, glide, the most beautiful black bench seat with fold down armrest, power brakes and NO power steering!

November 12th, a whole week later I was sick of the 283 and bought a 68 Caprice, 327, TH400, 12 bolt posi. The Caprice was rusty and I scavenged the powertrain for the GP.  I rebuilt the 327 with 11 to 1 domed pistons, L79 cam, headers and ran it that way for about 3 years. Then I found a rusty 68 Impala Custom Coupe 427 car, so................, the GP eventually became a 427,TH400 with all the power toys.

A late Friday night somewhat useless-but-fun-to-reflect-on car story.

Oh, I've been called Rainman more than once.....!

Some days it scares me too!  I don't ever recall a time I didn't do this. I still recall a lot of my classmates birthdays every year when they come around. My kids don't even roll their eyes any more when I say "today is so and so's birthday" and they have never heard of that person before!

I still know the combination for my locker padlock from high school, my dad's great aunt's phone number in Winnipeg (I haven't called that place in at least 30 years), all kinds of stuff like that.  The day I started my first parts job, the day I poured my garage pad for my very own workshop (1980), the day we brought home our brand new 72 Malibu when I was 14, the day I got my first new bicycle and on and on and on.....

Problem is, when I go to the store for eggs and milk, I have come home with a loaf of bread and never got what I went for.      I'm serious, it's happened.

The brain is a strange thing.

However, I don't recall everything numerical.

There is an autistic boy in Morris who has total recall, like Rainman. I didn't believe it could be, but it's easy to prove.

One day someone finally introduced me to him. I had seen him, know his parents but never spoken. When I met him, the first thing he asked me was "Mr Stevenson, when's your birthday?" I said "I won't tell you unless you will always remember it" and he said "I will." I said "October 10th"

About 6 months to a year later I happened to meet him at the post office.  He said "Hi Mr Stevenson" and I replied "David, when's my birthday"?  He didn't pause a fraction of a second before he replied "October 10th".  I was speechless.

This boy apparently also memorizes movie scripts too.

Another funny story about him. And please understand, I am not making fun of autism---

I have a very good friend who lives in Morris. Actually, friends with his whole family.

Morris is about 1300 people I think. One day, my buddies mom is at home when David walks up to the door, walks right in and says "Mrs B-----, do you have a piano"? She knows him, of course, and says, "yes, it's in the living room". "David, what are you doing?"

He says, "I'm counting pianos in Morris". He was going door to door and counting pianos.

Another time this buddy was approached by David and asked "Where is your car with licence number ABC123" (or whatever it was) and N--- says "I don't have that number". David says, "Yes, you do, it's on your -----------" and rattles off which car it was on. Sure enough, N--- goes home and that is the licence number on that vehicle.

David often used to stand along main street and you'd see him looking at licence plates and memorizing numbers. I find the capacity of a brain like his to be a miracle.

My lock combo from junior high/high school. I actually still have the lock somewhere. I can't remember dates like you do Carl, but i still remember the old plate number on my dad's car. I do know all the plates on the cars we currently have.

My dad is like that too. He'll say something one day like, "I remember back in 1930 on the first of May, the weather was ..." (he remembers) he'll go on about what he did that day at age 10. He can outdo me, him using his head and me with a calculator adding a column of 4 digit numbers.

He hasn't memorized pi to 100 decimals like some people do by reading it once or twice.

I have never forgotten my first experience with an older GM parts guy, a few years before I started in GM parts.

His son was a friend of mine and I was building an engine. It was evening, no place to get parts. I needed the retainer that goes on the oil pump driveshaft. The son and I went to see his dad to ask if he had one at the dealership (son had a key to the building) and he simply said "3764554, it's in row B, section 2, box 5"!!! Of course when we went there it was exactly correct!

That was the first GM part number I memorized and to this day when I see his son I will still ask him what the part number is for the oil pump driveshaft retainer!

I never witnessed it but people say he could add columns of numbers faster in his head than most people could do with a calculator.

Carl, you are the perfect Parts guy. Guys like you always know popular part numbers without looking them up.

I remember my high school locker combo too! 3-40-56. I'm good at remembering numbers but not names. I still remember the license plate # on my dads 69 Pontiac CZB364, even the plate # of my friends first cars- by buddy's 72 Cutlass from 1986 - 663BKX. I remember most of my childhood friend's phone numbers too. I have very clear memories of my childhood-all the way back to the crib. Crazy. However my short term memory is terrible. Just ask my wife..hmm

I had a client in who was helping his brother with funeral arrangements for their dad.  This chap was described to me as a savant...number thing.  He calculated and recalculated the contract for me in his head as decisions were made and unmade.  I looked at his brother who assured me that there was no need to check because he was correct every time.  For fun he divided a 9 digit number by a 4 digit number in seconds.  People are just amazing.

I had a local older fellow rebuild my SM420 transmission. He worked his whole career at GM in Oshawa, trouble shooting engines and transmissions. They said that if he heard a noise in a transmission, he could not only tell you what was the matter but also tell you the part number of what you needed to replace.

I have a almost photographic memory..  If I "take a picture" with my eye of a number" its alway there...
When I was in  air force, I had a 98% average   All their testing was multiple choice!  If I had seen the answer in class, I could remeber it at the test..

When I picking up my Camaro (at the Pontiac dealer) in Sept, the salesman had me use the OnStar...   The person offered me 300 minutes of phone time for 15 bucks   I rhymed off my Wifes 16 digit credit card from memory...  The saleman was wowed..

35 years of tire sales and inventory, and I ordered by part number, by memory..
If I was at home,(rarely) and a staff member called me, I could tell him where ANYTHING was, because I could "see" the whole building, in my mind...

Its not special, its a gift

My Wife called me a few minutes ago, from Port Huron Michigan..  She was not sure of a road to a store...   I gave her detailed directions from my head , becasue I could "see" it in my mind...      no wonder I  am crazy...
