Alberta Registration Question

Here in Ontario we can get a"Buyers Package" for any VIN number or current Licence number... It shows car history back to'73  and tells current wholesale and retail on cars 95 and newer
We can also get a copy of ownerships registered in Ont..

In Alberta, can you do the same?

I have a friend, with a Alberta car, and a lost ownership....

He has the car, and bill of sale, and of course the VIN number......

I have never seen anything like this.

If he's lost ownership, which I presume you mean he's lost his last registration slip, he can go to any registry office and re-register it.  The database that's readily available to the registries goes back to the early '90's, and if it's from before that the Alberta database does go back to the early 80's.  Anything prior to that will require an Out of Province Inspection.

When was the last time it was registered?  Was it registered by your friend, or someone else?  If registered to your friend within the last 15 years or so (back to the early 90's), he just walks in, shows his drivers license as identification, they look up the VIN in the system, and he can register it.  It's that easy.

you need insurance to register it.   In Alberta, the Bill of Sale is the ownership, the registration provides the owner a plate to drive it on the road.

That's why I asked for clarification about lost ownership.    Basically, if he wants to register it in Alberta, he'll need the following:

1. Bill of Sale showing he's the owner,
2. Out of Province inspection certificate,
3. proof of insurance (pink slip).
Alberta doesn't check other provinces to see if it was previously registered elsewhere, I think they only check to see if it was stolen.

Wow, it's really different in Alberta than it is here. Here in Ontario you are supposed to register a newly purchased car within 15 days. If the car does not have a Safety Inspection Certificate, your registration (we call it "Ownership" here) says "Unfit". Once you have it safety inspected, you take that certificate to the license office and the friendly (not usually) lady will provide you with a new ownership that says "fit". If you plate it at the same time your ownership has a second portion called a "Plate Portion" that shows your plate number etc. You get a sticker for your plate as well as another smaller sticker that you place on the back of your plate portion ownership.

No...  Hes in New Brunswick    car is in New brunswick
He has ownership signed by THE owner in Manitoba or Alberta
He thinks he can't re-sell car...
I'm telling him that in Ontario, he could transfer it, and get (as Todd explained) a unfit ownership...  (it would need a appraial for tax)

If you can't get a unfit ownership in the West,
it would explain why so many project cars are still in the name of past owners,  perhaps having changed hands several times....

I like our setup better......

Safety and insurance should only be a requirement "when applying" for plates...

I bought my pontiac in alberta shipped to ontario, turned out I had bill of sale ,no resgestration (ownership). Went to lawyer got affidavit. Licence bureau wouldn't accept. Here in ontario when you sell car you sign over ownership to new owner. Alberta lincence bureau told me that because of privacy act ,old owner doesn't have to give it with car. It took me 5 months to finally get one.Icame closeto buying an old ownership from Tex. anyway everthing worked out ,car is on road.
