rusty 66


i have a very rusty 66 sd.can the body from a 67 beaumont sd (6 cyl car) be used to replace mine? i know i'll have to transfer the vin and tag. and the front end and tail light bezels. but is the main body the same?

   Hi there. I know they are the same size.what i would like to know is.can i re-body my rusted out 66 beaumont with a 67 body.Just the body not the front fenders and hood.i'll transfer my front fenders ,vin and all other parts.

I think you will find if you research it that it's illegal to remove a VIN tag as well as to put it on another car, even if you have clear title to both vehicles.

A lot of folks don't like the word re-body, but using a 67 body to rescue a 66 can be done..  
We just had a 2 door Acadian rescued, with the front of a rust free 4 door ...

I have a friend who has rescued a 66 L79 Acadian with southern Nova sheetmetal

What about this car?   he owns both..  is it a 2 door, or a 4 door, NOW? he had to touch the VIN plate.

 i don't necessarily have to move the vin.but after i replace the floor,quarters,roof and doors there isn't much left. i just thought it would be nice to have real steel and not reprodution parts. i guess i could leave the firewall and  left door pillar and transfer the rest.

I'm certainly not telling you what to do but you need to be aware of the possibilities of being in serious trouble if you are caught moving tags.

Thanks for the info.I don't want to do anything illegal. i didn't know it would be a problem. i was thinking the vin is staying with the car just the metal is moving. i thought it might have been a good idea due to amount of rust on my 66,even the roof is rusty because it was a vinyl top.

Are you aware that is pretty rare? Not necessarily valuable or real desirable but unusual for sure.

6 cyl sd's are rare but they don't bring any money. It's a shame. Personally I'm building a rare car and I'm not moving the tags but it's basically going to be brand new except for the areas where the tags are. The reproductions of the 64-67 stuff is great and you might want to look at that because even the good cars are see thru after you sand blast them. That way the vehicle retains it's value and your not in trouble for moving tags. Full floors with rockers, full trunks, and full doors. How can you go wrong?

i wouldnt be changing vin tags, but i,ve heard stories of guys doing thorough restorations, and while both vin tags were removed, "to replace the old rivets with new rivets" the tags were "accidentally" mixed up without the owners knowledge. but these are just stories i,ve heard from guys on some other sites

I think you miss understood me. The Fire wall, roof, and quarters are orignal to my car but the floor, rockers, trunk, doors, hood, dash, around the window is new. You can't cut around the tags and weld it to another car. It's the same as moving tags. I ment using full replacement panels.

I'm no fan of rebody cars either but saving a car w/ parts of another isn't illegal so just be careful whatever you do..
Besides the rivited tags, keep in mind there's hidden Vins stamped into the body too...driver's side cowl lip where the fender mounts is one location on 66/67 Chevy2's..

Sounds like both are interesting cars... i really wouldn't be too worried about using all the sheet metal (the only vin tag is in the door jamb, firewall is a trim tag and irrelevant). you are not doing it to deceive anyone, and arguably you are using a more valuable car as a donor! If the 67 sheet metal is all worth salvaging, then it sounds like it may be a worthwhile project on its own! unless there is no frame or anything else? you may be better finding a southern chevelle body ...people with rotten cars change out all the sheet metal, find donor frames...so what is really left of the original car? part of the main body?

i would never have guessed there were 6cyl sd's in 67 until i've seen the cars pointed out on this site (off the monthly listings, none documented yet!)

Ok. i've decided to repair the body i have. i see lots of good looking body parts at a good price from Auto Metal direct. But were do i start? the floor and work up or quarters and work down?
