Tranny options for 287 CI Pontiac motoe

Has anyone put in a late model Automatic transmission into their 287 Cubic Inch Poniac motor that they would recommend? I have a 1955 Chieftain Catalina that I am looking to upgrade the transmission on as the present one is really clunky.

Thanks,

Derek

Derek. I swaped my US roto Hydromatic in 64 Catalina with a mid 80's Olds Turbo 350. You could likely do the same BUT you will have to get a adapter plate, as your starter mtr. bolts to trans. not "up" to the block. I used a 60's 326 V8 flexplate [flywheel] my block had threaded holes for starter, even though my starter bolted to trans like yours [lucky, late 64 block when they started getting ready for 65] drive shaft mods, but well worth the effort, whats wrong with your 4 spd. hydromatic????

I just got the car in November and have had a limited time driving it - went into storage for the winter 2 weeks later. In that limited driving time, it seems lik the shifting from gear to gear is fairly rough. I wanted to see if there are any options to change it as I don't think I would be happy if this is the way it normally operates. It still needs a good long test run (more than the 10 miles I have put on) for me to determine any other wants.

Thanks for your reply.

Derek
