Howdy guys, for your info a 66 chevy tilt steering column will not bolt into a 66 Canadian Pontiac (even though most of the car is based on a chevy chassis) so don't try like I did.
Especially don't get all enthusistic and buy one on ebay.
Below are some pictures of my original non tilt column at the top, the 66 chevy column in the middle and a correct (weathered) tilt column from a 65 Pontiac (same as 66)
The Chevy column is shorter, and will not fit the dash chrome molding of the 65 or 66 Pontiac.
Luckily for me my brother, who had been hoarding this column for his 65 409, decided to go the purist route and leave his muscle car original and took pity on me with my big sad eyes.
So I have a beat up tilt column I know will fit and I seem to have a spare 66 chevy one that I may rob a few parts from and then try to sell off.
Kind of an expensive way to figure things out.
Its quite possible that an amercian 66 Pontiac tilt column would fit a Canadian Poncho but I don't intend to invest any more money to find out.
I put a 66 Caprice tilt telescopic column in my 4 speed GP around 1985 Ken. I had to cut a bunch of the tube away to make it fit the dash, so I can relate.
Boy, I wish you would have asked me before you bought the Chevy column. I could have spared you some grief and saved you some money...

I wonder if that '66 Chevy column would fit a '66 A-Body....
I am 6'3" @ 260 lbs and getting my legs in under the steering wheel is always a pain. I have considered an upgrade to a tilt, but was going to add the knuckle (as in '67, to allow the column to collapse in an accident) if/when I made the change.
If this column would fit a Chevelle or Beaumont, it might have a bigger market and you might get your money back out fairly easily. Just a thought...
Another thought - would it fit your car if you added the knuckle from a '67 or later car? You'd get the tilt and better safety.

Hey Wes, have you ever unbolted your seat/seat track, and rebolted it in it's furthest position? I'm doing that when I reinstall it. You gain a couple inches.
It's tight and I'm only 6'1", 215.

Darryl Good suggestion. Now you mention it I recall doing exactly that on other A-bodies (20+ years ago). Not sure why I didn't on this one. But way back when, authenticity and originality didn't get much consideration. No one but me would notice if I moved the seat if I can hide the holes in the carpet. Wes
My Ididit colunm was ordered for a '66 Impala and it fit perfectly. It's the only thing that I didn't have a problem with!! I'm really impressed with the way it fit.It looks like it came with the car from new.
Just as an fyi, my 63 stock column is from a 63 impala 4 speed car, 100% identical, including stamped part numbers, except for the trim piece for the Pontiac dash. The tilt for 63 was also identical, I sold one from a Pontiac to a 63 Chevy guy. The Chevy 63 assembly manual tilt wheel showed all the same parts.
The parts for the powerglide and 3 on the tree columns were also very much the same in 63.
The 63 Pontiac and Chevy dashes also are very different. Seems strange GM would make tilts different for 66, but the same in before and after years.

Ive got a 67 Lemans convertible and had purchased a floor shift 67 GTO tilt column and was told i would need an intermediate steering shaft to complete??
Needing help The red column is was just remove from my 1966 parisienne floor shift. I purchased the black tilt that was to be out of a 1966 parisienne floor shift. It did have a parisienne steering wheel on it. the problem is the wiring ? My safety switch is on floor shifter. What do i have ?? Thanks much Fred
Hi Fred. Welcome from downtown Morris Manitoba! Good to see you here on Canadian Poncho.
Your safety switch will stay on the floor. All you need is the short adapter harness that comes off the tilt column. It converts the triangular shaped connector that fits into the tilt to the horseshoe style your regular floor shift column uses.
