You'll get many opinons!

All I ever do is wash it down with brake cleaner and paint. Don't use varsol as your final cleaner because it's a petroleum base and not what you want to use for that. To degrease it's fine but final cleaner should be alcohol.

Jonathan,

If you are going to run this engine in the car until you rebuild your 283 (you said that in another thread), don't go too overboard on it. Save your time, labour, and $$$ for other things. Just give it a quick clean up, and rev it up.

I had a '77 Cutlass that had a trans leak. It ate a nice-sized crater in my parents driveway ... I never heard the end of it!biggrin

scrub, scrap off the dirt, grease with varsol,

get one of those cheap wire wheels that mount in a drill, clean the remaining loose crap off,

brake clean it all, blow dry and paint it.

'chevrolet orange' of course. wink

Safety tip!!! have lots of ventilation when using the brake cleaner, and NO SPARKS!!!

the fumes from it are NASTY.

Hey Johnathon, what we do is use a degreaser on the motor, oven cleaner works, we power wash it, then we take a torch to it on low heat and it burns out the grease in the pores then last steps is we use laquer thinner as a final wipe down (not varsol~has a oily base) and never had a problem with flake off at all. Good luck dave

So you want to go green.Well if its not going to be in the car for a long time, go for it!

but you may get tired of looking at it

As for wasting time doing prep work and doing it right on a motor that is only going to

be in the car for awhile, I'd say your not wasting time if your learning something. It will

only make your next motor look even better because of what you have already learnt

here's a green motor from a 55 chev that I've done some work on..Kinda makes your eyes go krazy after awhile omg.gif  Keep in mind that this one has aluminum heads so you will see more green on yours
