so after some messing around with my ignition I put on a new starter and solinoid and she fires right up.......for about 1-2 seconds? Could it be a float problem or could the higher grade gas i put in it (with some lead additive) have anything to do with it?
Ive also tried moving the distributor, adjusting choke, more throttle, less throttle... ??
I'd say you've got a problem either in the ign. switch or, the resister wire that cuts back the voltage to the coil is cutting out, see if you have power on + side of coil with the key in run posistion, then check it in start posistion. I'll bet one test will come up "dead"

thx guys, i'll check the switch again. I put a multimeter on it and all the pins on the switch work from what the meter said. Now with the wire do you mean check it at the "batt" side of the dist. cap? With the altenator swap do i need that original wire from the "r" side of the starter solonoid or do i just lose it and put a wire from a 12 volt keyed source? Weird thing about all this is that it was working and running just before i had to take the headers off!! Weird!LOL

Are you useing only the wire from the R terminal on the starter to your HEI ? If you are it only has power while you turn the key to the start mode. When you let go of the key that terminal has no power. You need a solid 12 volt keyed power. If the keyed 12 volt wire you use looses power when you crank and has trouble starting you would then have to also splice in the wire from the r terminal so it has a solid 12 volts during start up.
I think I figured it out (well so far!LOL). I was looking at the wiring diagram and i tore apart the wires and it turns out that one of the original wires that splices in to the R terminal wire was off, so when i changed it over to hei i must have thaught this wire was not to be connected. Now it starts fine and i just need to do a bunch of fine tuning. thx everyone for your help, once again i couldent have done it without all of you.
