61 pontiac rear end ratio ?

This past winter put a 305 with a 2 speed PG, As there was a six in it originally it has 355 gears in it. I like to cruise around 60mph but tach is running around 2600rpm, at 50mph tach is 2200rpm, if I went to a 3:36 how much rpms could I drop at 60mph? I was thinking of 3:08's but with only a 2 speed trans think it might me to low on the get go. Any suggestions would help. thanks brent

Maybe "Carbuff" is comparing it to newer "daily" driver w/OD trans. My 2010 Suburban w/3.08's & 6 spd. O/D cruises at 1650 RPM at 70 MPH. 64 Catalina w/ 2.67's & a turbo 350 trans. is turning around 2500 at same speed. Catalina is more "fun' to drive when it "squaks" the tires in 2nd. on acelleration, [ the burb won't ]

Yes guess we are so used to the new vehicles idling at 70mph that now it seems that the older cars sound like the engine is overreving, I like ur setup Pete, I could handle 2500rpm at 70mph. I have a 700R4 casing in the garage, maybe that would work and leave the 3:55"s in. Any thoughts?

Ray, it will on take off, goes up in smoke but won't spin them on shifting into 2nd. The Catalina will do about 20' in 2nd gear & used to 'chirp" into 3rd. with the 3:42's out back!!!!  I'm amazed the old Cat. will spin em with the 2"67's just has "bags" of torque & tranny is "beefed" a little bit!!!
