September 2011 Feature Car

For September I wanted to feature a car that is unique and seldom seen by most of us. I was looking for a car that if spotted at a car show or cruise night, you couldn't help but get closer to get a better look. Cory Stulburg has a car that fulfills my wish. I can safely say I have never seen a Canadian built 1966 Pontiac wagon in person. Here in Ontario, they were pretty much dust before I had learned to walk. Cory's wagon has the perfect blend of modern upgrades while still retaining the spirit of the original design. Cory tells us more about his one of a kind ride:

"I found the car in a guys back yard in the little town of Mundare , AB . I knocked on his door and asked if he wanted to sell it and his reply was You cant afford it !! I said how much do you want for the car ..he said before or after I take it to stage 3 .i said I just want to know what you want for it . He said I want $3500.00 the way it sits but after I make it into a race car it will be more . Well for the price he was asking the car stayed .

The following spring I went to visit my sister who lives in that town and her and her husband suggested that I go visit him again as he is having cash flow problems . So once again knocked on his door and asked if the car was for sale , he said yes and asked what I would give him for it I offered $1000.00 and he said sold .The car was loaded on the trailer and taken home.

I live on an acreage and have turned my 4 car garage into a work shop , the last bay I have it separated off with plastic and that is where it was painted . The car had 58,000 original miles and was complete , he had installed an Oldsmobile 403 engine and transmission which was quickly removed and sold making the purchase price even less . All the chrome and interior pieces were there , other than the bumpers being rechromed all the mouldings and trim are original . The car was completely taken apart and stripped down , body work was done and then applied some paint , Endura black then sanded down and clear coated with Dupont clear .

We installed factory correct buckets and console from 66 Custom Sport , added some gauges and installed a 396 engine that has been redone and has 390 hp , 400 turbo transmission with a stage 2 shift kit ,dual 3 exhaust and  added 17 foose wheels in the front and 18x10 s in the back , 2 drop spindles in the front with disc brakes .

I guess thats about it ..it is a great cruiser and a pile of fun to drive .Thanks for your interest in it .."

I liked it before when I just saw a couple of pics. Now it's double cool...!

Love the bucket/console setup, GP steering wheel, the GP grilles and the "Grande" Safari idea!

Nice work.

Great looking car, every time I see an old wagon I remember the days of riding backwards in the last seat

This is my favourite type of car becuase it reminds me of how I would build my models when I was a kid. I never built anthing stock, I would get those 3 in 1 kits and mix and match parts and pieces to make a super cool ride...Just like this Wagon is super cool.

Cool car!!! Love it. One of my dreams has always been to do the same thing with a 65 Impala wagon. Congrats on a job well done.

Cool! I saw your wagon at the Rockin August Show this summer. I was parked in the same section. I also like the bucket seat and console idea. I'm not usually a big inch wheel fan but in this case they look great. Once again, Cool.

BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL and BEAUTIFUL. What a sweet ride brother, some real hauling in style. Wagons have always been way up there on my list of love for cars, long before they became hip to build and show. Your car is a real eye popper and show stopper. A friend of mine is building a 1966 Chevrolet wagon with a 396. I my self have a 1974 Chevrolet Caprice Estate wagon with 400 V-8 , just over 48,000 miles and in the family since new. There are pics of it on this site in members rides. I love your wagon brother and it is sweet to see another one saved and brought back. Keep on wagoneering. Cheers. George.
