Classic car insurance

Being in Calgary, I'd say your options are:

1.  Canada Brokerlink - they offer Intact Classic Car Insurance.

2.  Competition Insurance - you've already talked to them, and looks like they offer Hagerty Insurance.

3.  Lundgren & Young - they offer Hagerty Insurance.

4.  Legends Collector Vehicle Insurance - not sure what they offer.

I was with Canada Brokerlink, but a couple years ago they noticed I had a few tickets and didn't renew my insurance.  I waited for the tickets to come off, and then went with Lundgren & Young.  They don't require an appraisal, which suited me fine as I found dealing with the local appraisers somewhat of a hassle.

When I was with Canada Brokerlink, I had a hailstone come through the roof of my convertible.  They were with ING at the time, and the claim & repair were fairly straight forward.

My insurance company called to inform me that they will no longer insure my car.....the reason....not enough profit on a classic car policy!

So I'm shopping for a new company....Hagerty is all over the tv, and their quote is pretty good....so I was wondering if anyone has any experience dealing with them....good or bad?  And for any alberta members I've also talked to compitition insurance....they seem great also.  But as everyone knows the sales pitches are always great, I want to know that if I have to make a claim they will live up to the promises.

thanks!

Agree with you 100% they've bought out Lant, Whetter Oakland, Zehr's etc. here in Ont.I'm not sure how this "no Appraisel" is going to fly. Could get "stiffed" if they "reneg" on $ value if a claim is put in???? I've been with Lant's for "ieons" with my old cars, never had to put a claim in but heard they looked after you.

I use State Farm, mainly because they insure my home and daily drivers. VERY inexpensive. I've never had a vehicle claim, so I cant comment on that. I assume they are national, but I dont know about rules in Alberta.

Years back I had to make a total claim thru Zehr in Ontario.
Once I convinced the adjuster that something called a 19A clause did exist he backed off all his depreciation talk. ( Since they use independent adjusters this seasoned guy was not aware of the 19A clause and was sceptical of its existence )
Once he checked and was reassured of " agreed full value " the claim went smoothly and quickly.

I thought there was a company called "silverwheel".. I see there are "silverwheel" plans. but I was sure there was a company with the same name.

Ken that is an excellent point. I have Silver Wheel with Tony Lant and Company and they are one excellent company to deal with. I have been with them for many many years with numerous vintage vehicles and they have always been really incredibly good even when there are claims involved. Now they have a connection with Haggerty in the U.S. and that worries me. It is way too early to tell at this point what the future will bring. I hope that my super low rates for vintage car insurance with Silver Wheel does not start to sky rocket just because now they are owned by a BIG AMERICAN company that wants to start maximizing their profits. I feel that i am paying more than enough considering my two oldies are super babied and only driven from May to October. The pessimist in me can not help but think that bad changes are on the horizon. George.

Thanks for all the input. Im most likely going to stick with the local broker, competition insurance, and see who they put me with for a carrier. Hope I never make a claim!

Hagarty has officially taken over those policies jan 1 2012 - you ll always be better with an appraisal 19A or not

Same here....the Hagerty rep in Kelowna has a street rod (38 Chev) is easy to deal with and he works through ICBC. I brought in the paperwork for my cars that had been previously appraised when they were in SK. Hagerty was phoned in my presence and an 'agreed value' was established then and there. Easy...However, I believe the appraisals made it a painless procedure, we'll see in a couple of months how it goes though when I insure a couple others.

Ken what is this 19A that you speak of ? My last appraisal was about four years ago with a guy that Tony Lant approved. Do you know how offten Hagerty requires an appraisal for our vintage cars. I just got my renewal papers for this coming March. My rate did not go up from last year but i am now worried what the future will bring. Hagerty will hopefully be as fair as Tony Lant was with Silver Wheel. I was with Silver since the very start which i think was around the mid 1980's and i always found Tony Lant to be the greatest guy you could possibly deal with. Lets all hope for the best in the future. Cheers. George.

THE WAY THE 19A WAS EXPLAINED TO ME WAS "NO MORE, NO LESS" THE APPRAISED VALUE OF MY CAR IN THE EVENT OF A TOTAL LOSS.

19A is "agreed value" Goeff Coy has been running Lant for quite some time. Tony was very good also. Silver and Custom wanted new appraisals every 5 years Haggarty won't
