Looking for input on Wheel selection - 73 LeMans

Now that I have a ton of torque under my hood I am wondering about putting some bigger tires on the car because the originalish 14" size 225x70x14 are just overwhelmed by the Big Block.

I would only consider factory looks so to this end I have picked up some 1973 Poverty caps. I am considering either Rally II 15" or 15" Steel wheels with poverty caps. Keeping in mind that my car was never offered with poverty caps. The moon caps were standard on GTO in 73. The two looks are below. What is your opinion?  Thank you in advance. Ray

I voted Rally II.

I have always viewed the poverty caps as being more of a 60's musclecar thing than the newer cars. Just an opinion though, and you'll get lots of those I'm sure!

Pssst, I voted Rally II. After looking at the two side by side for an extended period I'm with Carl.

I have a set of 15x7, black...  if you want to borrow, and take a picturebiggrinbiggrinbiggrin

427carl says poverty rims and hub caps

are like a new 50" flatscreen TV in black and white....

plain rims and hub caps were the cheapest way to get car to dealership..

No one keep them on in the 60's 70's  (I was there)

(excluding race cars -which could not run hub caps anyway)

I voted poverty cap's, rally II's are too common. My first choice would be honeycombs, not to be confused with snowflakes. My GA has honeycombs but it came from the factory with rally II's. I have a set of those in case I get tired of the honeycomb look. So far, the honeycombs have been on for twenty years.

Ray, with all due respect, I vote neither. I don't think either suits the car.
The moon caps look like they were stolen off a cop car.

Hey big guy, you asked.

The rally II's look great, but no one has mentioned about rim width which is needed when larger meats are involved. You can buy some 8" wide rims for the back and standard 6" for the front. The 8" will take anything for the street. Just my opinion Ray.

Hey Ray, I like the dog dish look better, never thought in a million years I would say that,
but they look real nice on that car. Very cool.

I think top left is Beaumont, top right is Acadian. Those ones you pictured still make me think 60's, not 70's, but again, that's just me.

Those 3rd gen A-bodies have large wheelwells. Tire choices in the old traditional sizes are drying up. Why not consider a set of modern honeycombs in a 17" size? They are done in aluminum now so they are light, not the old urethane & steel composite like the originals which are heavy. You could put on some modern rubber and get some great handling. The GT never came with the poverty caps anyway (unlike the GTO). Generally just the Rally II wheels w/o trim rings, or the odd rare Honeycomb set were stock back then.

I VOTED STEELIES AND CAPS. I THINK WIDENED STEEL RIMS WITH BIGGER MEATS WOULD LOOK GREAT. I MUST ADMIT THOUGH, I HAVE NEVER BEEN A FAN OF THE RALLY II'S. IT'S YOUR CAR, SO DO WHAT YOU FEEL BEST SUITS YOUR TASTE.

Per Cam & Carl's suggestions, it would be great to have tires and rims that were worth more than the entire car biggrin
