Another source of confusion

I sometimes hear Acadian owners getting a little miffed when they hear people refer to their cars as Pontiac Acadians, not Acadians.

One potential reason for the confusion, as has been mentioned here, is that Pontiac dealers sold Acadians. I, however, have another potential, often overlooked, reason for this confusion........

Notice the grill.

The "little car" you are showing  is much later, and no source of confusion smile

The Acadians  and the Beaumonts were their own marque, built by GM, for the Pontiac dealers..

50 years later, they just got thrown into the new computers, as Pontiacs

    Most people don't care...

That car and all brochures etc all have "Pontiac" signature on them. The early Acadians and Beaumonts never had anything Pontiac noted on their body or paperwork. Early brochures told you to purchase them at "Your local Acadian (or Beaumont) Dealer."

In 1990 my wife told our friend how we had trailered our 65 Acadian (transmission was weak at that time) to the POCI convention in Kansas City. Years and years later we were talking with them again about this trip and showed her the car we had taken. We still laugh that all those years she had kept her mouth shut because she thought we were completely nuts to take a Chevette-style Acadian about 800 miles one way on a trailer just to go to a car show!!!!

out here in BC we have one more issue too --- in the early 80s ICBC changed all our registrations --- they all say "pontiac acadian" or "pontiac beaumont" now no

Check out this thread, it's from 2008, 3 of us got into a lengthy debate and it was a lot of fun and some good points were made. Too bad some of the pics are gone now but I hope the link works and you are able to read it. I think I join in after a couple pages. You'll have to copy and paste the link I guess......

When the Alberta registered '65 Acadian I bought was brought into the USA back in '67 (by the original owner), the US guys listed it like this:

I would think the USA motor vehicle guys could have been able to see the original registration and copied it .......... Wish the original registration was in the material I got when I bought that car.

Some more information to think about.

This is an Acadian Ad from a '62 McLean's magazine. The red "Acadian" is in the ad, not highlighted by me. In an era where brand loyalty was so prevalent, you really have to wonder why the ad doesn't say "at your Pontiac dealer" or "Acadian,........ the practical new-size beauty from Pontiac". Did the '62 ads for the Pontiacs say "Bonneville,.... the new full size beauty from General Motors"?

Again in the '62 brochure, first year for the car and no mention of Pontiac on the car or literature..........

Been there  Did that

The cars were sold under the Acadian label

as time went on, they were moved into modern computer data, as Pontiacs....   call them what you want   biggrinbiggrin

I almost wonder if GM Canada had a change of plan after the auto pact went through, seeing a need for transition into the future.

Early Acadian emblems had absolutely no resemblence to anything Pontiac.

Whereas later Beaumont emblems had a definite nod to the Pontiac arrowhead, even though they were not referred to as Pontiacs:

Perhaps they saw the day coming when they would start to merge Canadian and US Pontiac lines?

Disclaimer: The above writings are only pure speculation by me and have no basis in historical fact...

Actually, both "Pontiac", "Acadian", and "Beaumont" were going to be dropped in Canada. They were all going to be called "Poncho". biggrin
