A 1970 Firebird, am I crazy?

Let me know if I am crazy.  Yesterday I put down a deposit on a 1970 Firebird.  It is the base Firebird with a 250 in-line 6 and a column shifted two speed powerglide transmission.  The plan is for my 16 year old son and I to go over this car mechanically together using a service manual as a guide and get it ready for him to drive in a year when he gets his licence.  My neighbors will all think I am crazy not to help him get a new car instead.  I believe that those of us that have learned how a car operates and see how it works have a different appreciation for things.

The body and paint are good enough for a driver, the car runs and drives but I want to go over it with him to make sure.  When we are sure it is ready to safety we can register it and he can learn to drive it.  The nice thing is it is still an unmollested mechanically base firebird with a tough easy to work on drivetrain.

I just thought it would make a more lasting impression that a focus or prius.

But I think I am oldskool

What's better than a father/son project for bonding, plus he will learn more about his car, how it runs and how to maintiain it. Yes a better impression than a prius and way cooler styling!!! NIce ride!!

I dont think you are crazy.....I think its a great idea, and I did the same with my eldest son. It could do a lot for a young mans confidence, and not to mention the chicks will be fighting over who gets the passenger seat! (the term 'chick' is not meant to be offensive, as some broads cant stand it ). I know almost all of us would have loved to drive that to high school.

As long as it's not rusted out underneath, should be lots of experience for both of you

Not crazy... a great dad, though!  Your son is very lucky that you are willing and able to help him build his first car.

Back in the day, we had to buy and learn how to fix our cars on our own... drove some darnright scary cars back then too...

You are doing it right, teaching him about cars and how to do it right.  A learning experience like this can only be good for him, whether he chooses to adopt the car hobby in the future or not.

my first car was my trans-am and im glad i bought it. I loved that car and it taught me alot about cars (i never took auto shop in school) Plus like you said, he will appreciate it more because he will have to maintain it and get his hands dirty, not just pay for whatever needs done. And, there are no friggen computers in it to break down and cost a fortune!!

It looks like a cool car and also one that he can actually work on. The six & Powerglide are very simple and reliable. Not only that, it will be hard for him to get in way over his head. I recall a guy going to look at a car with his dad. When the father & son were going for a test drive, the father said "Put it to the floor!" the son thought it was a bit strange for his dad to egg him on, but the father kept it up. Finally the son nailed the throttle. At the conclusion of the test drive, the father told the son "there's no way in hell I'm going to let you buy a car that fast!" How devious of the father biggrin

Formula 250 all the way!

It's a great plan. That's what my son and I are doing with a base 307 3 speed manual 73 Camaro.

We get the car on Friday.  I have include a picture of the body plate.  It looks like it was Castillian Broze with a Saddle interior.

My only thought is that you should adopt me! I love that year and the double scoop.
It's a good thing that you're doing. Best of luck with it!

Your boy must feel like a million bucks that his car is good enough to stay inside with Dad's Goat.
